Thinking about putting a chip, larger exhaust, and cool air induction on my '04 6 liter. Any pro's or con's when doing a lot of heavy towing. This is a crewcab dually F350 with a rear air ride suspension already put on for leveling and stability.
Modded (i.e. programmer/module installed) are known to have head gasket/head bolt issues over time.
Not saying it's a guarantee, just that it's common.
A larger exhaust and cool air intake will help keep EGTs lower , especially if you add a programmer.
Be sure to run gauges if you add anything like a programmer/tuner on it.
Me personally, I tow heavy and rely on my 07 for work (approx. 2250miles per month) so I'm very hesitant about adding a tuner to it. Already have a cat-back exhaust installed and an intake that I might install.
Head over to the 6.0L Diesel forum and do some research on tuners and chips. The 6L doesnt do well with the Edge, Bullydog, Banks...etc. The only thing i recommend and you will find out from your research is that an SCT w/ custom tuning is the way to go. Its a thousand times better for your truck and costs half the price of the others. Hope this helps
Sorry, but 6.0L doesn't do well on it's own. They are prone to head gasket failure. Torque to yield head bolts on a turbo diesel? What were the engineers thinking? If you chip it you are just uping your chances of major problems.
Don't do it unless you ready to get ARP studs (the chip turns these 6.0 s into granades) My brother put an airaid cold air system on his and then the techs at ford told him that it damaged his turbo and some sensor.
Rather or not you do decide to do the tuner later on, I would suggest atleast doing the gauges, particularly if you tow alot(as I do) and especially if your using an auto tranny as well. I would suggest custom tuning, however, what alot of people haven't mentioned yet, is that you can get programs that would help you in towing(or just for regular driving or various other conditions as well) and not affect hp or tq at all. This applies more to people with auto trannies as you can adjust shifting(both firmness and shift points). Just more food for thought as most people believe that tuners are limited in what they can do, but with custom tunes just about anything is possible. Now if you go off the shelf then your stuck with what they give you.
