Ok guys, i know this is not the right section, but i know a bunch of 73-79 fords on here have Toggle Switches. (big black ford, huge 460, nitrous comes to mind) My 1980 When i went to start it just kept going in circles when i turned the key. I could start the truck w/o a key but didnt do that often, and i have been thinking about switching to an arm/push button ignition.
Like this one, but w/ a push button starter to the side/with it. http://www.autozone.com/R,NONAPP3737...ductDetail.htm
Or this one if i can bypass the switching the key on and off all the time. http://www.autozone.com/R,NONAPP3512...ductDetail.htm
How hard would this be to install and if yall have already done this in your truck can you tell me where to hook up, and all the short cuts!! I know something has to go to the starter for sure. (I think) I just remember seeing a bunch of toggle switches in the 73-79 Forum even though mine is an 80. I still crave the looks of them. If this doesnt make sence at all just tell me....
With a push button all you are doing is interrupting the start circuit.
Therefore placing a push button in between the pertinent terminal of the I switch and S terminal connector at the Relay will produce a push button starter crank.

So i wouldnt even have to turn the key on or anything. You use some big words also, lol, could you or somebody use littlier words or just explain the hole process to me?
Normal process "Insert key/turn to start/release to run"
Push button process "insert key/turn to run/press start button".. Seems like an extra unnecessary movement.
you would need a wiring diagram to eliminate the ignition switch and replace it with a toggle. then you would have to wire a momentary contact switch in for the starter circuit.
in my opinion, it would be easier to fix the current system, then you would not have to worry about the big steal me sign with the 2 switches in the dash instead of a key type switch.
Definitely would make truck very easy to steal by not having a key. Why not just put a new switch and cylinder in?
Ok psquare7575, 73f100, i took yalls advice, and fixed the current setup, but seeing how its a mud truck, i just thought it would be easier to put in toggle switches, seeing how i already have a swivel for my 3 gauge "volt/temp/oil, and when i dont need it i swivel it back into my custom "cup holder", and just thought seeing how im 16 it would be cool for me to have a push button starter, because stuff like that enthuses me. But seeing how yall are the pros, i took yalls advice and found out that a 9 dollar part wasnt that hard to install and the steering wheel puller that i had to buy was 12, so for under 20 bucks i did pretty good. I just thought it was gonna be alot cheaper "and cooler" to put toggles in and all.
It's not all that uncommon to have a toggle switch for ignition and then a push button to crank the truck.. believe it or not guys, that's 'cool' to some of us.
I hate the tactile feedback of a key ignition.. it just feels sloppy in such a big vehicle. I have my crank wired to a push button for redudancy (and simplicity while I work on it) but plan on mounting it in my dash when I finish more of the major mechanical work.
Driving is an experience for some of us.. flipping up a switch cover, flipping a toggle switch then hitting a push button to start it is a pretty cool way to start a truck.
someone here has a wiring diagram for the cylinder, if they post it you should be able to figure out how to wire a switch for the 'on', 'run' and 'crank' position.
Toggle switches can be cool. There is alot of stuff you can wire to toggle switches if you like having switches in the truck. Also if you get rid of the fact that you have a key you need another switch to shut the truck off. It is just a little easier to stick with the existing system, IMO. And zpmps2 fixed it quicker then figuring out the wiring diagram I would say. And that leaves him with more time to wire up a switch panel for everything else that he can put on switches if he chooses to. Do you have any pictures of the swivle gauge/cupholder thing? That sounds pretty cool.

I have never posted pictures on FTE so i would have no clue, and i havent taken much pictures of the buildup, but i know the website that i "copied" it from, they should have a picture, let me try to look it up tonight once i get outta school.
when I bought my 79 F250 it had a 2 standard household light switches used to crank it. One was ign on and the other was start. I ripped all that stuff out and never looked back.
Hopefully I have a pic. That thing was ghetto fabulous
EDIT:
No pic. Its a shame too. The power wires were long enough to crank the thing from under the hood and almost to the tailgate.

I was thinking about doing something similar. I was going to keep the key switch, but just install a pushbutton to crank the engine. All you would have to do is have the push button go to the starter relay. Just turn the key to ON, and press the button. If you didn't feel like doing it that way, you could just turn the key to ON and turn it to START and it'd do the same thing. THAT way in case the key start position ever stopped working in the middle of nowhere, you could use the pushbutton.
