Maintenance schedule

I just bought a new 2008 Ranger. Reading the manual it tells me that my maintenance schedule should be 12,000 Kms or 6 months. The local Ford dealerships(3) have told me 8,000 Kms and 6 and the other 2 said 5000 kms and 6 months.

Anybody know what the real schedule is???

Go by what your owners manual tells you. I, personally, would change the oil filter after its first 1000km and top it up with the same type/grade of oil that came in it from the factory. A synth oil should be good for at least what the owners manual states. If you are driving the vehical for only short trips, where the engine isn't allowed to fully warm up, then go with more frequent oil changes, due to condensation build up in the engine. BC is a cold damp climate.

I agree, follow the manual.

If the Dealers suggestions differ, ask him to show you Ford documentation in writing, that states it updates/supersedes your owners manual, then get a copy & keep it with/for your service records, in case you need warranty service, so you can prove in writing, that you've maintained the vehicle to spec.

For example, to this day, some Dealers still don't know that the 4.0L Ranger & some other Ford engines, aren't to use 5W-20 oil!!!!
Nor do they know why ( the oil pump isn't designed to pump/supply enough volume of 20 wt at operating temp)!!!! Apparently they've never closely read the latest TSB, or service letter, to catch it, or they just don't want to have to stock two weights of bulk lube & dispensing equiptment, so we have to be on guard & look out fo our rides!!!! lol

Thanx for all the help guys!!!

I am curious as to why the oil change interval has changed. I am still driving my 92 Explorer and changing oil every 5000 kms. Should I be extending that time?

Is there any articles you could recommend that I read on oil and it's effect on engines?

Again thanx for all the help!!!
