thats what i have been reading. the only problem is the earlier 6.0s im trying to stay away from since the last 3 have been crappers(by oasis). haha ive looked at 2 7.3s now and the oasis is clean and they both pull hard. the one ilooked at today was a 02 7.3 350 long bed crew cab. very mean looking with only 64,000 on the clock.

Here's another word of advice....not that I'm shooing you away from that 7.3....read about 'lot-rot'.

This is a condition where a turbocharged truck sits more than it's driven. Corrosion begins to become a problem for the turbo. They have been known to clog up and then someones gotta tear it down and clean it up.

I would be a little wary of an older truck with not many miles on it. Again, I'm not trying to scare you away from that truck...just something else to be aware of.

msgtg - is there some easy way to look for that? Some way to "clean it up"? Just curious... Obviously I have little diesel experience.

yeh like how would i be able to tell if there is anything worng like that? the truck was very great and pulled hard for a stock 350. the modded 250 i took for s pin was very nice but this one was comparible. is cleaning the turbo vanes something a household mechanic can do or is it more in depth than that. i have a buddy whos dad works on the big rigs maybe he could check into doing that for me.

I don't believe the 7.3's had the variable vane turbo, so lot rot wouldn't be a problem in that respect. But, it can cause problems in other areas, such as oil seals, fuel seals, bearings, etc.

The 7.3 does not have a variable vain turbo so it does not have lot rot. That term was only for the turbo on the 6.0l because the housing is made of steel and can start to rust on the inside from sitting and then the vains which ride against that rust start to stick. On the 7.3 you do not have to worry about that. The truck your looking at with the 7.3 looks good and I would not be afraid if it. I have a 05 6.0L and love it and I also have a spare turbo sitting in my garage because I am one of those drivers that does not tow all the time and so it is very likely the turbo will stick on me.

yeh see i just like the talk about the 7.3 being the reliable work horse engine.


I do like the pick up of the 6.0 over the 7.3. i am just kind of exploring my options and found another one had the oasis run and this is what came back. hasnt had any repair since jan of 07 and it says the turbo was replaced due to clog of carbon. what do you guys think??? looks like alot of em were for recalls and small problems for stuff like interior overhead console not latching.

I'm not knowledgeable with these and this is more to increase my own knowledge but... It seems that there were quite a few problems in '04 then '06 and again in early '07. Is this correct or are these just typical things?

Pal, it's kind of hard to say. I don't like the continued problem with cold starts that has resulted in all of the injectors being replaced.

How many miles are on the truck now? Remember, the motor has the 100K warranty.

Here's my question, did the owner cut back on driving the truck because of the problems or did they continue as before. If they continued to drive the truck as before it may be an ok unit.

that 03 that i just listed has 55000 miles on it even. but depending when it was manuf. it may no longer be warrantied

Hi Slow- So it looks like you are in Vegas or near by looking at all the Craigslist trucks you are asking about. You will quickly find out that Vegas-Phoenix people are willing to pay way to much for a PSD truck.

I just recently ( sept 07 ) picked an 03 f250, only dealer issues it had was some little recall for 22K with 26K miles on it. People think the mods are worth something in reality, a modded truck has been driven hard and actually drives the resale down.

Don't pay extra for mods. Most PSDs here in Vegas are hammered. Take your time and look for a good one.

Don't pay over Private Party KBB and you should pay closer to Trade In Kbb

yeh i have looked at a few craigslist trucks but others were either at ford or at a dealership thats in provo utah. i am looking for one that hs never been chipped or modded. they are hard to come by but i will keep on looking. thank you for your help.
