Hello all, my 96 PSD has a reman E4OD from Aamco that shifted terribly when installed. Long hesitations between 1-2, 2-3, 3-4. Sometimes it wouldn't shift at all. I had the dealer reflash the PCM and it made a HUGE improvement. The trans now shifts great in all gears except from 2nd to 3rd; it starts to shift, hangs up for a few seconds, then completes the shift. However if I jump on the accelerator, it doesn't hang up between 2nd and 3rd, it will slam into 3rd.
I'm not sure about this, and I don't remember where I read it either, but here goes:
I think the PCM needs to relearn how you drive. After a tranny rebuild / replacement, the PCM needs time to know how you're driving and what to do about it.
Find a place where you can drive so the tranny can upshift and downshift AT LEAST 20 - 30 times. Do this at different speeds. If the 2-3 shift hasn't come in properly by then, take her back to AAMCO and have them test the tranny. There should be some kind of warranty, right? It could be a simple adjustment for them to make, or it could be a bad tranny. Either way, they should take care of you and get you back on the road.
Another thought - Did you get a new torque converter or reuse the old one? If you reused the old one, that could also be the problem.
I just dropped off my truck to get the tranny checked/rebuilt. It was not shifting from 2nd to 3rd at all. The tranny guy I took it too, said it was probably the forward clutch pack. He also said the reason E4OD's are so weak is b/c they don't have a support somewhere on the inside of them that cause a couple seals to become oblonged and let alot of fluid get by. He's gonna install the updated support and a billet torque convertor in mine for around $2k and of course the complete rebuild.

Not on an E4OD. That didn't start on the diesel trans until the TorqShift in 2003.
Thanks Madvan. I thought I'd read that some place.

Its happens every time i mess with the PCM.
I believe it has something to do with the RAM (input) with a change in the new ROM (output) of the PCM along with the CCM (comprehensive component monitor).
Seems no one knows. I have never gotten any answers to questions i have had on this.
Just takes a few miles to settle in. Things like TC haunting ect.
Mainly auto trans related issues.
