I know this has probably been beat to death. I have been researching for quite a while now and want to flush my transmission. The truck is a 2000 Expedition 5.4l with 4R100. As far as I know it has never been done. I got it from the second owner and he never did it. It has 63k miles on it now. I do notice some "shutter" every now and again (like going over a rumble strip in the road). My wife has never noticed it. I happens about 1x per week that I notice.
I started looking for Mercon. I found Mercon/DexIII at the local pep boys, etc. I now see that Mercon V is the recommended fluid by Ford. I have read that they stopped licensing Mercon, that they changed Mercon V, they don't care if my transmission breaks now because it is out of warranty, etc.
1. Would you use the old Mercon/DexIII that is out there?
2. If the Mercon V is really better stuff, is it worth it to use it?
3. If Mercon V was changed, is there any way to know it is the new stuff and not the old stuff that they said "don't ever use it in the 4R100"?
4. How about my t-case? I also says use Mercon. It is the A4WD. I think it is a BW 4406 (not sure though).
5. Is a multi fluid like Mobil 1 ok to use? Is this better than just old Mercon but not like the old Mercon V that was no good for this transmission?
I really want to do it using Mark Kovalsky's procedure but am stumped by the fluid options. I want to use something that will protect the transmission and not destroy it.
Welcome to the site:
You will have a thread here that can get quite a few different responses.
Might have more to read in the oil and lubrication forum, below. Just above the off-road forum.
Here is a link to a thread from some time ago, but once you are in, you can navigate and check out all of the related threads. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...ercon+mercon+V
Went down to the local Walmart tonight and saw everything there said "for vehicles previously serviced with Mercon/Dexron III". I guess this is the way to get around the licensing thing right. I suppose we don't really know what is in those bottles?
I will have to check around some more. I seems the Castrol Mercon V says meets both Mercon and Mercon V and "approved by Ford" or something like that.
The dealer quoted me $149 for a flush. At $5/qt for the new Mercon V it would cost me $100 to do it myself.
Went to the local Ford Dealer today and visited the parts counter. They sold me the new Mercon V for about 3.40 a quart. I bought 4 gallons and 4 quarts. I also got the filter there. It was $27. Not too bad and I have the right fluid. I mean the fluid they are saying to put in there now.
