Heads for 460

I am about to build a 460 (DIVE 6015-A2) that has D3VE-A2A heads. I want to bump up the c/r to get more power for towing and hauling but want to be able to run on pump gas. Should I look for a set of earlier heads or are there things I can have done to mine that would help with performance? What would be the better cost option for these heads? This motor will be smog free as I do not need to pass the sniffer test.

Thanks!

Craig

Heads for 460

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-02 AT 00:06 AM (EST)] I was informed that the D0VE heads would raise the compression of my 77 with D3VE heads on it now to a little over 9 to 1. I am not sure how it would do on a 71 shortblock. It may have higher compression pistons in it since they didn't start dropping compression ratios until 1972. If it has the earlier model pistons in it, I would guess that you would end up around 10.5 to 1. This would surely run on 93 octane, and would probably be ok on 89 if the timing isn't too high and the carb isn't too lean. Jimmy

Do your pistons have ONE or TWO eyebrows on them?
Having ONE eyebrow is better for compression ratio than having TWO

I will have to look at the pistons to see how many eyebrows they have. It is funny that the block is a D1VE but the motor came out of a 1976 Thunderbird. I bought the car from the original owner who said the motor is the one that came in the car. I pulled the motor and tranny, then junked the car.

If they DIDN'T Change the block design it's not really funny that the 71 design is in a 76 car, that's the way they do things at Ford.
The V designation was used in Lincolns too as well as the T-Bird..

I was looking at the Head interchange guide and it shows that a D0VE heads of 72-73 short blocks yield 9.6 CR as 9.3 CR on the later ones.

What do *YOU* guys mean when you put SHORT BLOCKS in your posts?

To me,I've always known :

A SHORT BLOCK is an Engine(usually rebuilt)WITHOUT Heads ,Exhaust manifolds, Intake manifold.

A LONG BLOCK is an engine(usually rebuilt) WITH the heads ,exhaust manifolds and Intake manifold

I think Bull meant DOVE heads (cast in 1970) on shortblocks from '72 to '78 produce a 9.3-9.6:1 C/R.

I also agree with Dennis's definitions of shortblock/longblock.

One exception to long block, not always does it include an intake.
