Been there, done that. 4 kids, two 100 pound + dogs. They fit. Going on 8 years with my battle wagon. Even with gas at +$3.20/gal and replacing suspension parts every two years, it's still cheaper than a new vehicle. Can't even compare anything to the safety of an Excursion, well maybe an M1A1, but I've heard the AC isn't real good in those.

Plenty of room and AC!! LOL
I think you will be happy with the space. I actually think it has more useable space then a van. Biggest issue is if your wife is driving it make sure she is comfortable with it... It is a little big to park in most parking lots. I don't mind it but I had a Suburban before this truck. Pro's and con's on the X vs Suburban, burb had a little more cargo space but the eXcursion has more leg room. My son is 6'3 so leg space was inportant.. I think you will be happy with it overall ....
I have a diesel and love the fuel milage 18 + .....
My cousin's family is on their second Excursion. They've got 4 kids, the dog, and luggage, and they all fit well. They love their truck.
I bought mine for the cargo capacity as well (despite being single, I tend to haul lots of stuff around). I'll agree with Beth that the Suburbans seem to have more/better cargo room. The Excursions are better in my opinion, though, and I've owned both a k2500 Suburban and now the Excursion. Certainly the Excursions have more room for passengers.

Compared to safety wise, i think the ex competes with the M1A2!
The vehicle works great for my family, too. Me, wife, and 6 kids (8, 9, 11, 15, 17, and 19). We have taken it on two road trips from Birmingham,AL to Miami, FL and back (two round trips). Love the vehicle, travels wonderfully, rides great, even the kids love it much more than the older Suburban we used to use, and that's with one of the older ones taking turns in the back, too.
Excursions are the best! I sold my 2002 X to my brother several years ago and kicked my self ever since so I bought another one (2005)!
I'm 6'7" 280lbs and my wife is 5'10" our 2 boys (2 & 3) I'm guessing will inherit the height and we wanted as much passenger room as possible.
My brother is 6'8" 260lbs and both of us have LOTS of leg room. The main issue is the windshield height. The Suburban/Tahoe has a shorter windshield and less headroom compared to the X.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. I have a Ford E150 high top conversion van, and it has much more space than any Excursion ever thought of having. You can walk around in my van -- ALMOST (my wife can ). Can't do that in an Excursion.
Keeping in mind though, each vehicle has it's own specific purpose.

sorry, I was thinking mini van ( I get the chills just saying it)
I had an Astro conversion van (not even E150 sized) that had better passenger space than the X, but it had nearly 0 cargo space and the towing was not so good. Had a nicer TV though.
The X is the most capable multi purpose vehicle there is. If the X is to small for your stuff you will need a Club Wagon or a literal bus.
I tote Me, wife, MIL, 4 kids and cargo just fine. Wife and I are tall, kids not so much...
I only have 2 kids. My son is 14 and my daughter is 11. They say that this is the rich mans family but I have never seen a dime of the money. Anyway....you will love it when you have to start picking your kids up from basketball and football games. Oh, did I forget to mention that you also have to pick up their 8 friends also. Sometimes I think I should just paint it yellow.
Beth my wife question is do I have to park at the end of the lot when at the store, work, school and so on.and as for as driving it I have a 01 250 cc 7.3 and she drives it around town.(she likes the 4" lift and 35's).

You guys are good to go then! The eXcursion has a better turning radius so swinging in and out of spaces much easier. My husband has a 2000 F250 I drive now and again let's just say it don't turn on a dime!!!!...
