I changed my mind on the wheels, I bought a set of old style aluminum slots. Front are 14x6, and the back are 15x10 . I got them on e-bay, they need to be cleaned. What is the best way, and what do you use to clean them.
I use acid mix with water for my truck wheels...spray it from a weedsprayer (after wetting the wheel down) and it starts to turn white.
Then I rinse it off with water...keep doing this till when you spray it and it doesn't turn white again...and that';s about the best you'll get...this is assuming the wheels are NOT polished or WERE NOT polished (sorry about the caps, just have to stress the point).
If they were/are polished, then get one of those new "flapper" things and get busy with some rouge.
im with mike here . on all the road trucks i cleaned it with a muriatic acid / water mix then started polishing them up . i have had some rims that after cleaning i've had to wet sand going to finer and finer grit's then polish so it all depends ............
Rusty, if they are the old magnesium slot wheels, "Do Not" put aluminum brightner or "mag wheel" cleaner on them. It will turn them black. My uncle did this years ago to a set and had to sand the surface off before they could be polished again.
Don't waist your money on the Powerball or Flitz ball, I've used both and threw them away. All I ended up doing was burning up a good cordless drill. Mother's aluminum mag cleaner works well. For magnesium and other metals, I found a product called Ultra car care products, they have a website. A bottle of metal cleaner is about $7 and lasts quite a while. Otherwise, get some rags and elbow grease. If they are really bad, use some wet or dry 2000 grit or 1500 grit and sand the surface, then polish it out.
the mother powerball would be my chose, every spring i have to clean my wife jeep rim up after a winter of salt attacking them here in the twin city, use to take up to 2hour per and with the powerball a 1/2 hour to a ulta shine.
if you have a heavy build up, start by lightly using scotch-brite.
then use the powerball and powermetal polish on a virable high speed drill. start slow and the slowly increase the speed until the polish is black, wipe, repeat, and repeat until you start to get the shine you want. then use a paint polish and a rag this will clean the little bit of black film that left behind and it will shine even brighter . if your happy with it but a good wax on them to potect. if your not, hit the with the powerball again. i think you'll like out come.
What will happen if they are polished and I use acid on them?
Rusty, if you put acid on a polished wheel, you will get a brighter color, but a dull finish. If they are already polished, I wouldn't recomend using any sort of acid, it will take some time polishing to get them back to that stage.
Thanks guys; I used an aluminum cleaner by hand today and got a pretty good shine. I'll get me one of the power ball to use next. They turned out good, pics are in my gallery. My right arm is going to be sore in the morning.
Rusty how much did your frame drop with the jag front and rear setup it looks like 12 inches to the frame bottom? can't tell from your pictures for sure?
