New Television Pops While Watching It

The receiver doesn't have HDMI. I use HDMI from the PS3 to the TV or from the HD DVD to the TV then optical to the receiver. The TV has coax out and the receiver has coax in. Is that as good as optical? I want the best with what I have.

Digital coax is pretty much just as good as optical (think about it--it's just a baby brother to the RG6 coax that your cable probably comes in on). You do need a good enough (shielded) coax cable, though, not just a cheap composite video RCA cable that came with that VCR you bought 15 years ago. You don't need to spend $75 on a Monster cable, either (or $20, even). Something in the $5-10 range is fine as long as it's shielded.
