If I were to have the cam changed, would any computer work have to be done to the truck? Also, would the cam change have an adverse effect on the longevity of the motor?

Or should I just scratch the whole cam idea, change the gear ratio, and just take it easy with what I got?

No computer work is needed and I'm sure that a little engine life goes with a cam upgrade..
I would save your money and get a f150 or a f250 with a 351 when you can.
