I just had the e40d in my f250 replaced with a new unit 5 months ago, and its shifting hard. it clunks going into reverse or park, and the temperature sticker on it shows ive hit 250 degrees.
the parts are under warranty, but i still have to pay for labor to get things fixed/replaced.
what can i do to fix this thing for good? the e40d is trashed a second time, and im not even running 35"s yet!
The temp hit 250?! What have you been doing with this transmission!? That's EXTREMELY hot. Either you've put entirely too much stress on that transmission without a cooler or the techs made a HUGE mistake when they installed it.
A tranny cooler? To be honest I dont trust them The e40d that is . I went through 4 in last truck till got a good rebuild (And a Law suite ) . On second in this truck . (Went bad first week ) .From now on I'm getting them from Ford .
not sure if this applies in this case or not-but I had a problem with e4od-was the instrument cluster-speed sensor codes popped up-replaced cluster and all problems gone!!!sensor goes from rear to cluster and them ecm-was losing signal after warm up-guess a resistor or something crapped out-drove me and a **** load of mechanics crazy!!!
the little thermometer is a sticker type deal that they slapped on the side of the tranny pan.
i checked the fluid, and its pink, not burnt.
the truck has barely even towed anything since the new tranny, and it was installed right. i off road the truck often though, in 4x4 for long periods of time. i have a transmission cooler, thats a descent size. where the hell did i go wrong with this thing?
the temp sticker has me stumped-is she showing any codes???I know in the 95 e4od the have a internal temp solenoid-if she got that hot should have left a code!!all trans codes should be on there-shift codes and all????
That temp sticker is probably not very accurate and even if you did hit 250 as long as it didn't stay their it should be fine. You can overwork almost anything everyonce in a while for short periods of time. Are you sure it's the tranny clunking? I would check to see if you have a lot of slack in both diffs. Sometimes things don't sound like they are coming from where they actually are. If not I would have one more question.
How do you drive off road. I have a 96 Silverado I use for a DD, I have had that truck off road, on a drag track, and pulled a 49 F-1, 68 D100, 84 D-150, 2 Corsicas, an S-10 2wd, and a Sanoma 4x4. I also use this to pull my 5x8 Cargo trailer. Min 3,000.
The only thing I have had a problem with from off roading is a wet disributor. But I don't (rock) an auto. I will, pull forward, hit the brakes kinda hard. (stops the drivetrain) then hit R. About the time the truck stops sliding is the time it hits R. Same thing D. Just a thought. You can abuse the (*^* out of Fords, Chevy, Dodge turcks off road, so long as you take care of them and you think about what you doing and don't do something stupid.
when i off road it, its mostly me chuggin through mud, or deep sand, which doesnt strain things much. i did a couple of steep trails which could have heated things up, since i had it pushing in 4wd lo, but i take good care of this truck.
i dont have a code puller. obd2 code pullers wont work on pre 96, correct?
i can have it checked hopefully in shop tomorrow.
I'm sure if you dig around here on this site you will find alot of info as well....
These were just a couple of quick links i pulled off of google
but explain what needs to be done.
I hope this helps
update on the transmission, its gotten worse. it slams into 1st and 2nd. and takes forever to hit 3rd. anybody have any ideas? this thing isnt a towtruck or a race machiene, just a dd. why is this tranny such an issue?
it sounds like what happened to mine-down shift extremely hard and up shifts take for ever-need to check codes-it may read unable to read speed sensor or something like that-it drove us bonkers!!!hey going down the road at 65 it went from od to 2nd gear-what a thrill ride that was!!!!a mechanic friend had a good scanner and set it on speed and I drove it like 15 minutes and the speed on his scanner or what ever it was dropped like a rock as I was going 45 miles per hour-it was telling the trans I was sitting still???
