a guy i work with told me that i could do nothing but good by putting 2 gallons of kero in my tank ,then fill up. he said it would make the truck run stronger and start easy. any ideas on this one?
i don't know about the newer trucks, but the older ones would run just fine off kero. my dad has a 1988 7.3 that he bought new and i drove it when i was in high school. ran out of fuel and put some kero in it to get me to the gas station that had desiel.
Actually, quite the opposite would happen. Kerosene is almost like straight #1 diesel. Compared to #2 diesel, kerosene and #1 both have less BTU's per gallon of fuel. Look at what happens in the winter. #2 is mixed with #1 to create a winter blend fuel, since #1 diesel has a lower gel point, this makes sense to keep the fuel fluid and not wax up on you. However, fuel mileage in the winter sufferes because of the lower BTU content of #1 diesel. The same effect would happen if you mixed kerosene in.
Not to mention, kerosene has less lubrication than #2 diesel, so you would need additives to get that lubrication back up to spec.
he siad he does it in all 3 of his trucks and it works fine. iwas thinking along the lines of diesel haveing more lube then kero. i did not even think of the lower btus
I used to run a half tank every couple months in my old 6.9L. An old timer told me that it would keep everything clean, he also mentioned that its too dry.
Years ago when our mixer trucks would run out of diesel, when in small towns we would get 5 gallon cans of kerosene and add a quart of oil per 5 gallon to lube the injectors, the old detroits and cummins would seieze the unit type injectors on straight kerosene.
Kerosene is good for lowering the gel point. Otherwise, as mentioned earlier, less BTU's, needs lubricity additive, etc. Unless your running Bio I'd pass.

Just don't put any in a gasser. Tends to tighten things up a bit.

I second this post entirely!!
It wont really hurt anything to add some kero but if you dont need it to lower the gel point or need an emergency source of fuel, why bother.
My dad's company gives out company vans for the service guys to drive. A few years ago, one guy ran low on diesel and filled up with Kero since the gas station didn't sell diesel. Well...a couple miles down the road he had to call the tow truck. The fuel system had to be flushed, and I think they had to replace the injectors or the pump.
Anyways...dad has since upgraded to one of those Freightliner vans with the Mercedes-Benz 5-cylinder diesel. He loves it. 24mpg in a 5-ton van and more power than the 7.3L.
