OK, here is my situation. The truck in my sig. is getting a whopping 8.1 mpg.
I have done a complete tune up including filters and timing. My comute to work is mostly 35 mph speed zones with very few stop signs. I can't figure why this truck is so terrible on gas. I love the truck but I am going to be forced to park it or get rid of it if something doesn't change. Most trucks like this under these conditions will get around 12 mpg. I'm only getting 10 on the highway. I can't afford to drive this thing any more. The truck runs great, only 115K on it, doesn't use oil, and still SH***Y mileage.
Please help! I'm having evil thoughts out of desperation. Any suggestions will be welcome.
I have a 95 F350 with 351w E4OD. 4:10's. With 36's I was gettin 8-10 mpg around town, and 11-12 on highway. With 265/75/16's Im gettin 14mpg around town. As tom said, what gears/ tires do you have?
I do have 4.10s and stock tires. Temp. in the past has been running cold but I just put cardboard in front of the radiator, we've been -10 at night lately. Pretty flat commute. I think I'm going to try changing the thermostat next and hopefully get rid of the cardboard. The mileage has been terrible even before the real cold temps.
I quit driving mine to work and got a beater that gets 30 mpg. Keeps the miles of my truck and I save $. My truck is used for hunting and playing in the sand.

I have a Jap Jeep for hard off road use, and it gets around 20 mpg. It doesn't have very good road manners being locked up and short wheel base. I like the comfort of my truck. I don't mind a "little" extra for the gas but this thing is BAD! I just think it should do better. I'm not asking for miracles just mileage within reason. Even 11 mpg would be over a 30% increase.
Just a thought, maybe your brakes are hanging up and dragging your MPG's down? When was the last time you looked at the brakes- might be worth a gander.
Brakes are good, replaced front pads and did tire rotation last week. All rolls nicely. I've heard maybe 02 sensor.... Anybody have additional info on that? I don't want to spend $80.00 for nothing.
What about the 4;10 ratio, what rpms are u at at 35-40? that might be a start
did u put the gears in? i know a buddy of mine couldn't take his stang on the highway w/ 4;10's b/c he rev at like 5500 doing like 60-65, got him pulled over by a statey...good luck keep us posted
Revving 5500 at 60mph?! Wth?! I've got 4.10s and I run JUST over 2000rpms at 65. I don't think your gears are the problem Kai, although obviously they aren't helping your gas mileage.
Have you tried pulling the codes? More often than not, a bad o2 sensor will throw a code. But you're right, a bad o2 sensor can cause gas mileage issues. How 'bout your cats, what kind of shape are they in? A clogged cat can yield REALLY bad gas mileage.
No cats, one time about a month ago it did code 02 in the memory, I didn't even see the light come on. Occasionally on these real cold mornings the CE will flicker and it has always been if I get up around 50 mph. The code is for the EGR position out of limits. It rarely does that unless temps are close to 0 or less.
Clean your EGR valve. And pull your codes again. The CE light doesn't have to illuminate for the computer to store a code. If it threw an o2 code at one time or another you probably have a bad sensor.
I'll give it a try and keep you posted. Thanks for the advice. It will be a while before I will know but as soon as I do I'll let you know. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to post up. I'm always lurking. I think I'll go ahead and change the 02 as well, I have no idea of the history of this truck so who knows if it has ever been changed. Isn't it recommended as a general maintenance after so many miles?
