mine uses 17 qts

i have a 2001 and was wandering how much oil does yours take. during a oil change i put about a qt in the oil filter and the 14 remaining in the engine fire it up let the presure build up turn it off and let it set for about 15-20 mins. then when i check it its at the 2qt low mark. after i put 2qts in start the truck and check it again its perfect. so i've just been putting 17qts in every oil change now. any of you seen or heard of that before. if not sucks for me for having to buy 2 extra qts at oil change time.lol

I have to put in 18 qts but I also have a bypass filter so I just figure its because of that.

16 with the bypass filter. 15 before it was installed. I wonder where the extra oil is going. Are you the original owner? Maybe someone swapped dipsticks with you.

You have the wrong dipstick, go to dealer and check part number . Or your HPOP is leaking all its oil back into the main pan. Does it crank for a long time and then start?

no im not the original owner ive had the truck for about 10,000 miles and it has just turned 153,000. when you say long crank how long is to long on these ps? even when its cold out it only turns over maybe 3-6 times then fires. to me that dont seem long. and is it going to hurt anything having the two extra qts in there even if the dipstick is wrong?

You're better off being a little low than being high. It can cause seals to leak, and it'll burn it and soot up your valves. But the main thing that is bad about overfilling the crankcase is it can cause the oil to foam.

My '01 also takes just a hair over 14qts incl filter.

I put in 15 qts, including the filter. Just a "tad" over the full mark. Have not had any problems with this for 130k miles. Uses a qt/ 3k miles, but seems to be using less since the change to Rotella Synthetic.

Austin is correct, If you over fill it can cause aeration(sp), our injectors do not like air (either in fuel, or oil).

3-6 roll overs before starting is good. A long time would be 10-20 seconds of the starter grinding.

I would check the part# on the dipstick also make sure that the dipstick tube is all the way in the fitting on the oil pan.

As a further check.. maybe someone with a 01 (who uses 15 qts with filter, which is normal) can measure their dip stick length to compare... I agree, it sounds like we talking different lengths here..

My 2000's dipstick is exactly 37 3/4" from the rubber bumper at the base of the handle to the end of the stick. It should be the same as the 2001 7.3.

Mine does not have a rubber bumper on my 99.. but measures 37 7/8 to the base of the T handle (at the 5/8 diameter). Sounds like we have a bunch of different dip sticks on our 7.3's
