460 heads

Fellas, first time on. Great site. I found a 460 out of a 72 Lincoln Mark IV the casting numbers on the heads are D2VE A2A. Are they 92cc? and what kind of pistons should I run to get 400-450 hp. I plan on using a 650cfm carb, weiand stealth or RPM intake, cast pistons, port the heads as much as possible. I haven't decided on the cam yet, kinda leaning toward Comp or Crane. I am putting this in a 1976 F150. It will be just for play,no mork involved. Also how easy is it to get posi-trac out of the 1/2 ton rear ends. I would like to run around 3.70 gears maybe 4.10 haven't decided. 1 more thing, should I run a stall converter. Thanks Guys any help would be appreciated. Can't wait to smoke some bow-ties......

92cc. It'll take domed pistons to get the compression ratio up to at least 9.5:1 and a good cam to get 400hp. C/R rules in 385 series engines.

If you're after off-the-line acceleration, you'll need a minimum of a 2500rpm stall converter to get it moving. Use stock or less if it's off-road.

Talk to a cam grinder about your needs. You'll have to provide them with engine specs (ci, c/r, manifold, carb cfm), converter stall speed, trans, rear end ratio, truck weight and tire size.

Out of curiosity, why would you want to get rid of the limited slip?

If it comes with a limited slip, really I would rather have that!! That would be perfect. I was thinking that the 76 came with one wheel for traction.. I had a 79 with a 351m and I could have swore thats what it had?? Hey thanks a million for the info..Always bleeding Ford Blue..

You called it Posi-Traction > That is the GM terminology.
Ford calls it Limited Slip > Refering to Traction to both wheels.<

NO you don't need domed pistons! if you want a torque monster with alot of power bore the block .060 over and use cast pistons with about a 19.c.c. dished surface. clean the surface of the heads and the block and you will be right at 9.6:1 compression. have the heads schaved just a few thousands if you want just alittle more compression or use a different head gaskets. a good cam spec to start with would be a crane part number #353942, i know there are better ones out there but this will give you a view off cam specs since this is the one cam i know about. and you wil want to use a 750 vacuum or mechanical secondaries for carb., it's up to you on choice vacuum for alittle better gas mileage. have the heads exhaust ported to get rid of the emmision bump in the exhaust port this will free up the exhaust flow, AND BY ALL MEANS go by yourself a set of L&L headers for this motor this will add 40 h.p. just by bolting them on. don't by a cheap set that doesn't fit or just looks cheap you'll get exactally what you pay for. L&L headers are made exactually for these ford trucks with a thick header flange for NO leaks.. and be careful about stall convertors. a stock or one that stalls just alittle higher than stock will work just fine for everyday driving, if you going to do alot of driving under 2,500 r.p.m.'s then your probally going to have problems with the convertor locking up when your driving. these combo's will have you in the range of around 425 h.p. with no problems, and futher reasearch with get more out of this set-up. P.S. talk to people who know alittle about these motors. C.J. ..

Hey CJ: Thanks a million for the info. I appreciate it very much. And by all means I will dig deeper on the info about the 460 engine buildup that I will be doing in the near future. Thanks

I stand corrected on the C/R issue. I'm only familiar with forged pistons and don't know what C/R is available in cast pistons.
