Just purchased a F150 4wd w/351 and 117k miles. Plan on pulling a 22' camper this summer. Am looking for ideas on bolt-on aftermarket items for increasing power and torque??
Easy.....drop in a 302......there's a boatload a things that you can do if it hasn't been done already.....open up the exhaust...better flowing mostly...the bends in the pipe from the factory are ridiculously small and bottleneck the heck out of it....get you a highflow cat...or even the entire wye pipe.....then get a better flowing air filter...Just to start out...Luck
I pulla 1971 24' Terry , not exactly a light camper by any means, only problem I have is going uphill from a dead stop, other than that pulls just fine loaded down with supplies, guess thats where a diesel would perform better.
Only suggestion I would make would be to get a good weight distibution hitch, makes a world of difference, and keep plenty of distance between other vehicles, make sure tranny fluid is up to par and a better tranny cooler.
I just added an Edelbrock Performer intake and a set of 1.7 ration roller rockers to my truck, I already had a custom bent y pipe and tru dualed the exhaust with a set of summit turbo mufflers, and also a K&N stock replacement air filter. My truck rocks, I can smoke my 31x10.5 tires on command. I am sure it is going to pull my mustang much better this summer.
Other than opening your intake and exhusat, would be to regear the rearend. You rpm is going to go up and your gas mileage up, but you would have more low speed power.
I would also like to know what kind of difference your 1.7's made. What size engine you got tfowler?
I have 351 with a 5 speed. before my intake and rocker swap my truck didnt really have any low end torque. If I were in 5th gear crusing around 40 mph and got to one of several hills on my way home I would have to down shift to 4th to maintain speed, not to say my truk wouldnt pull the hill in 5th, Iwould just be down around 30 mph at the top of the hill.
Now with the new intake and rockers I can hit the sam hill and my motor just growls and I can even accelerat up the hill. that to me is an amazing difference. I cant wait to hook my car up behind it and head for KY see how she really pulls.
