Temp gauge inop

Is there anyway to test the temp sending unit? I have the 300 6 cyl and i was looking at it today i changed the t-stat but the piece of pipe that the temp sending unit is in has like rust-welded it in... is it easier to just get a whole new pipe and unit? Or can i test the sending unit to see if that is the problem? Thanks guys

There temp sensitive sensors. I know there is a propper name. But there is different resistances when its cold to hot. See if you can do some research and find the temp to resistance scale. You know like 0ohm is like cold, and 10ohm would be hot. However it goes lol.

The ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) will either be in the heater supply tube at the rear of the engine, or in the lower intake manifold.

Connect ohm meter between two terminals on ECT and set meter to 200,000 ohms. Read the meter with engine cold and then engine warm and use the table to check the values you get.

The temp sending unit only has one wire connected to it.
I do not know of any chart to test one.

To test it take the one wire off of the sender with the key on and the gauge should peg in one direction and then ground the wire and the gauge should peg in the other direction.
If it does this the gauge and wiring is good and you need to change the sender. If not check the wiring and the gauge.

Yeah.. the sensor that drives the dash gauge is seperate from the computer temp sensor in or attached to the thermostat housing. The dash sensor is a small thing about the size of a dime with a single wire attached to a stud sticking out the top. couldn't tell you where it is on the I6, but it has to be in the water jacket somewhere so look at the lower intake.
