Locker anyone?

Hey guys, I gotta get some kind of locker in the rear of my 2002 superduty, Ive had bad luck with limited-Slips in the past and was thinking of maybe a full locker, (detroit locker) Are any of you guys driving around with one? Would it be that bad for daily driving around town??

Or is there possibly a real good limited slip that wont leave me spinning one tire, and wont break?

Thanks for any help!

Thumbs up Detroit Truetrac

From what I have read...it is not a good idea to install a locker in a truck that tows heavy and a lot. So...unless you do not tow...IMO...stay away from the full lockers.

I do recommend the Detroit Truetrac. It is a gear driven limited slip...and is SO much better than the OEM LS. I do not have one installed on my SD, but do on my "slightly Mod F150" (see sig)...and LOVE IT! Here is a link:

Also...more info from Randy's...

Good luck deciding...

If money isn't an issue, and you wanted onboard air too, ARB makes makes some good air lockers. Then you can engage and disengage for application i.e. towing or offroading.

If I ever re-gear my F-250 I will add some kind of locker with full disengagement. Regarding the OEM limited slip, this may be old news to everyone but me. This winter I noticed that if I keep my big fat right foot OFF the throttle pedal, engage compound low (even in high range 4 WD) the limited slip seems to work. We have had a lot of ice this year and wheel spin is easy to detect. Normally, I mash the throttle and spin all over the place. With the low rpm method, the truck seems to move out just fine.

No true locker except on a drag car. They have a tendancy to break driveline components. Used a lockrite locker on an older truck and it even felt wierd when taking off while turning. Almost like the truck was being forced to turn but wanted to go straight. Worked great off road though.

Well this is whats wierd to me......maybe someone could help me out here... I just traded my 2004 6.0 for a 2002 7.3. Pretty much identical configuration except motor. My 2004 was pretty good off-road and in the snow and ice, in hairy situations I would only get one-tire-fire in the rear, but most of the time it would keep both spinning, It wasnt an FX4 and I was almost positive it didnt have a limited-slip. Now I got this 2002 with the 7.3 litre, this thing is one-tire-fire in the rear 99% of the time, it terrible on snow or ice, I cant even spin a cookie cus it will only spin one tire at a time. This is why Ive gotta get a locker of some sort..

Your situation is very common experience with the SD OEM LS.

Not sure how many miles on the '02, but an easy (and less costly) method to help the OEM LS is to do a gear oil change. When it comes time to add the special additive friction modifier...instead of the called for 8oz...just go with 4oz. This should help the LS clutches catch sooner. That is assuming the clutches are not worn out. Again...not sure of miles...or vehicle history.

If the gear change with only 4oz of friction modifier does not do the trick, then it might be time for a new LS.

Thanks biz, I dont think my 02 has a LS unless its just not working at all.... Is there a tag on the cover that could tell me whether it has one or not? 85,000 on the ticker.

Absolutely...but an even easier method is on the door VIN sticker. Under the "Axle" heading should be a code.

Using the SD tech folder found here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...lder_____.html

Axle Type
31 — 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C1 — 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
32 — 4.10 non-limited slip, F-250
C2 — 4.10 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
33 — 4.30 non-limited slip, F-250
C3 — 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
36 — 4.56 non-limited slip, F-250
C6 — 4.56 limited slip, F-250
Also...another way of checking if you have a LS...is to get the rear wheels off the ground. With the SD in neutral...rotate a tire. If the other tire rotates in the opposite direction, then you have an open diff. If it rotates in the same direction, then you have a LS.

Hope this helps...

aahh...that's a bummer! I guess you are in the market for a Detroit Truetrac or the ARB air locker (more $$$). Either would be a good choice...

Good luck...

Thought I would bring this old thread up of mine. So I ordered a Detroit true-trac for my truck, should be in sometime this week. Are these hard to install? Im guessing you just slide the axles out and pull the carrier.. Any of you guys intalled one? Thanks for any help!

I've had one in something else and would not hesitate to install them on all my vehicles.
