Thought I would bring this old thread up of mine. So I ordered a Detroit true-trac for my truck, should be in sometime this week. Are these hard to install? Im guessing you just slide the axles out and pull the carrier.. Any of you guys intalled one? Thanks for any help!
I had one put in about 1.5 months ago. The biggest thing is if you may need to shim the axles going back in. I ended up taking it to someone to install. I supplied all the fluids and parts and had them put it in. Eaton suggests a 4 to 5 hr install. You will also need new bearings, the true trac doesn't come with these, and I ordered new from ford. I figured that it would be a good time to replace with new, and now good for a number of years.
The recommended full synthetic. When you pull out the old unit the bearings are pressed in, so it just made sense to me to get new, and not try to press those out.
Good time to also look at adding a new diff cover, because you will probably have rust on the old one, it is off already, plus the new 08/09 alum finned cover looks good on there.(plus it is fairly cheap)
I agree with Wallz... this is the time to address every current and future concern with the axle. It would be a shame to install the new locker then 6 months or a year later have to tear it down again to replace bearings, gaskets, etc. that could have been replaced during the locker install.
I have a true trac installed in my 08 about 3 months ago and at first I didnt like it because it does spin out one wheel when your about to get stuck and then you have to hit the break to get both wheels to spin, but i will say that for every day driving it works flawlessly and improves traction at least 80% over a open rear, I have never been a big fan of fords traction lock dif it always seems to fail easily like in my 5.0 one wheel peel
