Wow, thats pretty crazy. 4.5 l at 410 plus hp. Things are going to go out of control. This means more diesels on the road, and fuel will be 5 bucks a gallon for my beloved strokers. I feel like cying now.
The idea of having the exhaust running through the valley of the engine just seems like a bad idea. I understand the logis of a shorter exhaust path, but having that much extra heat near the center of the engine just seems risky especially with aluminum heads
You forget, this is to throw a diesel into an SUV, Crossover, or other wannabe contraption for the yuppies that see us, want the diesel, but not our image. Because to them diesel is cool...
It's a marketing scheme for the average american to buy a diesel that will fall apart at 100-150k. However that will give GM market saturation for a couple of years, and "everyone" will be talking about their diesel this, their diesel that, and this is how they probably hope to unseat ford from the #1 seat. It's sly, and shady, but as a populous, America is dumb fat and happy, as long as we get out big mac, a beer, and a ball game, we will believe anything.
I wonder how it will hold up compared to the rumored 2010 F150 diesel... Some good ideas there, but (1) I agree with others on durability concerns and (2) first year designs always scare the chit outta me. Give it 5 years and then see how it's doing.
Very interesting article. I have the same opinions about the exhaust routing and aluminum heads. However, this is not a heavy duty engine like the big boys. I'm sure it will hold up but It must have one heck of a cooling system. Also, with now intake manifold what about intake temps?
I remember seeing a ford flatbed style tow truck with the v-6 diesel in it, looked pretty cool, hopefully they get on the ball and start putting those in F150s
