So once i buy a family van here shortley, im gonna save some money and pull my 302..
Gonna get a local shop to put new rings/main bearings in the block and have my friend's dad clean up the heads...
Need to get some ideas for headers...no emissions here so dont need cats or nothing, probably get a local shop to fab up a dual exaust pointin straight out the back..
What do you guys think about cams? Not sure what I should go with or keep it stock?
Shorty or Longtube headers? Anything i can do to the intake?
Should i do anything with the tranny? I dont want to spend a ton of money, but i dont want to cheap out either. Will i need bigger injectors? Is there anything i can do with the ignition?
While the truck is de-commisioned I going to get a new box, tail gate, door and back bumper, and do a quick spray job on the truck..Maybe paint the frame and make her nice...new shocks...make my truck NICE
Anyway , any input would be sweet...I would like to start aquiring some parts because i probably wont start for 3 or 4 months...would like to only have it off the road for a few weeks, and spend under 2 grand
I would go with longtube headers.....And there are some upgrades you can do with your intake and injectors You should look in "Jegs" or "Summit" and see what your options are .......You could also think about a 5.8 swap its alot better engine...... good luck!
Nevermind that. Your lower intake can flow alot more air you have to find someone that can port it. I would go with longtubes (more low end torque)
comp cams has a 800# you can call to get a coustom cut cam (depending on your setup) .(1-800-999-0853) You could change the gear if you want, the options are endless
Many will argue that the 5.0 intake manifold runners are already too large for any low end torque, so porting them would only make that aspect worse.
I would definatly agree that the intake runners are to larg for the application. To increase the torque in the engine you have to increase the air velocity which means longer runners. One of the intake spacers will help in that area.
You could also think about a 5.8 swap its alot better engine
Theres nothing wrong with a 302. For some truck applications its better to have the smaller 302 instead of the 351. My 89 has a 302 and a 5 speed and in the summer pulls 21 mpg. I dont tow or haul with it. With a 351 I would maybe get 15 mpg.
302's last just as long, if not longer. The 351 is a great engine, but hey, so is the 302
I'm in pretty much the same situation here with ya. Only difference is I'm working with the 351w. I'll prolly end up buying a used motor with known amt of miles for cheap. Rebuild it, pull the engine and tranny, install new bands in the tranny, swap the engines, and replace the WHOLE cooling system. Powersteering pump, EGR, pcv valve Ignition, Exhaust manifolds, O2 synsors, new fi-flow cats. ( Have to have them) and brand new true dual exhaust 2.5 with flowmaster 40s. Just to give you an idea of what other people are doing, or thinking of doing.
