Front rotors and pads?

My front rotors are pretty warped, the steering wheel shakes really bad when I hit the brakes at anything over like 40 mph, so I wanna swap 'em out and put some new pads all around and was just wondering where I can get a good deal on them and which ones to go with? I don't wanna spend a ton of money, but I also wanna make sure I don't get junk that is gonna warp or brake worse than the stock stuff that's on there. I was just gonna go to the local autozone or discount auto or something, but I figured someone on here knows where I can get better parts online for probably the same price or cheaper! Plus I wasn't sure if I should get ceramic pads or semi-metallic, or something else? Thanks for any help!

I just put carquest severe duty rotors and pads on my pickup. They work nice. For the price I hope they last a long long time!!

Don't get ceramic pads. They don't work as well. Really designed for less brake dust.

On my SD...I went with PowerSlot and HAWK pads on all four corners. A big improvement over OEM setup. Plus...do not forget to do the slide pins when you do the rotors and pads. You would be surprized the difference it makes.

I purchased mine from http://www.buybrakes.com/ . GREAT service...and the price was right. They usually have a discount for FTE folks.

Good luck...

i've had 2 trucks w/the same problem you describe. i went the cheap route both times and turned the rotors (they were within specs). worked fine. my curr enttruck is from the north and the slide pins are stuck- really stuck. anyone got a creative idea of removal? i've started on the pb blaster program, but the bfh and punch aren't even budging them. i don't have a hot wrench right now. they won't even spin when clamped in a vice. be sure to check hub bearings and ball joints while you're at it.

Just ordered brake pads and rotors last night from www.autopartswarehouse.com New power slot cryo rotors ps8586csr/csl and hawk pads hb302y700 for $354.31 free shipping and $10.00 off for some reason. Spent a few hours looking around and this seemed to be a good deal to me. Make sure you lube the pins well with silicon brake grease, sticky pins seems to be the cause of most problems with the brakes on these trucks. Mine are going on the front end of my 2000 excursion that has 160000 miles on it. My wife's 05 excursion is just starting to shake alittle when brakes are applyed and it only has 28000 miles on it, i am going to rotate tires and lube pins!

Good luck!

I also installed the Hawk LTS brake pads and the Powerslot cryo rotors on my '99 Superduty a couple months ago and could'nt be happier. The difference in stopping power and smoothness over OEM is unbelieveable!

Wheeler's offroad has slotted and drilled rotors for about $500 for all four rotors. We put them on my friends Ex, and thier holding up great. He had alot of problems with his brakes prior to this install.

slotted and drilled rotors are not a good thing to do...

You're better off with blanks

Why not? Aren't they supposed to help cut down heat and gasses to allow for better braking?

$.05 of free advice ...do NOT get brake parts from Autozone! Any time I got brake parts from them the rotors were either warped, or their pads wear out REALLY quick...Also, their "lifetime" warranty on pads is pro-rated. My best luck has been from CarQuest, if you have one of them in your area...I put CarQuest pads and rotors on my 2000 Superduty 3 or 4 years ago and I'll still be able to go to Spring at LEAST before I need to replace them. Pay a little extra for the superior pads and they'll last quite a while.

Good luck !

The outgassing thing is from the past. Modern pads and compounds do not have that problem.

As far as heat, a solid rotor will have more surface area for stopping as well as heat dissapation.

All brake pads outgas, period. Drilling and slotting does help braking, especially on a big heavy truck. Which I see isn't noted in your signature, as owning one. Its alot different than a mustang. These trucks weight over 7k and need all the help they can get in the braking dept, not to mention when they are towing.

I had plain rotors too many times. Couldnt make them last more than one hard braking. I actually drilled my own and they easily lasted 3xs longer than the other ones. After 40k miles on them I just replaced them and actually could have kept running them, they still look good. New ones are slotted and drilled carquest severe duty rotors with severe duty pads. They brake very well!! I dont care what theory guys throw around, experience tells me drilled and or slotted rotors are an improvement over stock. BTW everyone told me drilling my own would cause cracking in the rotor. I watch this carefully and without going so far to dye pen or magnaflux them they dont have cracks after 40k. Just my experiences
