Advice

Hi everybody, I've a reader for quite some time and I have to say I've learned alot, but now I need some help with a combo I'm running.

I have a what I believe is a 1969 429 block 2 bolt main (C9VE), I'm using a 1972 460 (2YABC) crank, a set of 1973 460 heads (D3VE-A2A)which I believe are 91.4 cc's and the C9VE connecting rods (please correct me on my codes if I am wrong). Those are the basics, now the block is already at the machine shop they are telling me its within specs to be re-ringed but recommend I go 20 over. I bought a set of Speed pro h535p-20 hyperuetectic flat tops that apparently should bring my compresion up to 9.76:1 because of the lower deck height, now I'm stuck on a cam. It's going in a 79 ford 2wd pick-up. I want it to be a total sleeper and I LOVE the sound of a stiff cam. I have heard to try a 234/244 @.050 but I have also heard 234/234 @.050 whats the difference? .I could use some tried advice on choosing a intake aswell. I've already got a C-6 rebuilt with a stage 3 kit installed and haven't ordered a tourque converter yet, some advice there to would help.

Thanks in Advance,
Sean.

I used a comp X-Treme 4x4 cam in mine, should do exactly what you want to. Mine is .030" 9.8 compression stock D0VE heads with 2.24/1.76 valves. Makes 525hp @ 5700, 530 lb-ft @ 3800. I cant remember the part number, but it sounds mean, really sounds like a pro-stocker when the truck is cold, but still has a "noticeable" idle when it warms up. It's a .572/.580 lift, duration in the neighborhood of 224/234 @ .050, or somewhere close.

My .02

Call the cam companies tech lines and see what they reccommend.....most have toll free numbers....or go to their web sites and see if they have a profile sheet you can mail to them.

What works great for one guy's engine, may not work for yours......and then you are stuck with a cam and a bad taste in your mouth for what someone tells you works great for them.....

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Mar-02 AT 01:49 PM (EST)]234/244 @0.050 is getting up there in duration. You won't be able to use a stock torque converter with that cam. I went with a 218/226 and it is perhaps a might small for a 460 and stock converter. Something in the neighborhood of 220-226/230-236 would be about right for a street 460. If you plan on doing any towing or want to use an auto tranny with a non high-stall converter then you definitely need to stay below 230 intake duration at 0.050. If this truck is going to be only fun and mostly strip action then the 234/244 cam or even bigger might be what you want.

Mavman:
Where did you get your numbers for your engine combo??? Desktop Dyno?

Later,

JJ
