that is the desirable HD case too. Just too bad is is a cleveland bolt pattern - not the pattern for the small blocks. Well, and the fact that it is out of my price range anyways.

the ribs on the back of the case signify a HD case. That's what mine looks like. We replaced half the internals anyways and put a manual valve body in it, so I'm not sure about what all is different, but when building the c6 for the race truck my tranny guy said it is pretty much a must for off road racing.
Cool, thanks. Both of mine have the ribs. The race one is fully rollerized with a reverse patern manual valve body, a wide ratio planetary assembly, kevlar band, etc. The other is just stock. The race one has an experimental gearvenders unit on it and uses an atlas II transfer case.
C-6 transmissions only come in 3-speeds. The external overdrive lets you "split" the gears giving you a total of 6 ratio choices.
You can replace your c-6 with an E-4od (if connected to a 385 series motor) but will have to re-work the crossmember and buy the electronics kit. (harness, speed sensor, stand-alone computer) There is also a company making AOD transmissions that will work on almost all Ford engines exept FE blocks and require no electronics. The AOD's however do not have the strength that an E-4od has or the bullet proof C-6. I'm sure other will chime in with more details but this is the basics. The strongest way to go is to add a gearvenders unit behind your tranny or transfer case if it is a 4-wheel drive. That experimental unit I mentioned is a one-off custom gearvenders unit designed to fit between a c-6 and atlas II transfer case. They currently do not offer one but are working on it with me. I will post a pic of it later.
Gearvendors may seem expensive now, but compare it to the electronics needed for a e-4od or to replace 1 or 2 AOD's and you're right there...
I think AODs should have been called "POS's" instead. Heat is a MAJOR factor on these and therefore unless you have a TON of cooling power they get killed quickly. I will never run one again.
