i really gotta start paying attention . i'm finally beggining to see the light at the end of the tunnel again financially , and was making a wish list for both trucks . i wanted an express bed for the 49 and just do away with the grain bed as it is pretty rusted out underneath . what was in our classifieds here and i missed out as i'm not scouring every nook and cranny as usual , my bed and its sold !!!!
F-4 didn't come with express beds, the only pickup boxes were offered on the F-1,2 and 3. I have seen one F-5 with a pickup box on it but it was a custom made box using modified F-1 modified fiberglass fenders:
If you want to do something like this for your F-4 you'd be a lot better off building one from scratch since it's not going to be stock anyways. The 8 foot express boxes are extremely hard to find in decent shape and if you would find one you'd have to do a lot of work to lengthen and widen it to get it to fit right.
yep i knew that bob just thought a 1ton pickemup would be cool . figured on trying to find a bed , i may have to scour the farms around here , off of even up to 72 as it wouldn't be correct but it would look close then get a set of fenders and go to town . the dump bed is rusted out in the frame of it pretty bad so ........... who knows i may go another route yet or maybe just sell it and put the cash towards bessie . i dont have the tools or the time to do the fab work myself on the bed .
ill tell the wife you told me i could HEE HEE ! no iwas gonna go that route but bud sold that dodge and gave me my money back .it would've needed some cosmetic surgery to give the bed sidea the appropriate look , but no biggie . he done what is gonna become the other bane besides the " auctions " scrapped it as it was worht more that way . so it fell through .batting around other ideas yet though .
It might not be as bad as you think to fab your own bed. Check out tip49, https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=30211
Tom is fabbing his own. He bought some sheet metal, had it broke at the right angle for the top of the bed sides, welded some tubing to mimic the uppr role. He did something similar with the front as well.
On my regular bed I used the front panel and bed floor from a 2005 GMC that I cut down to fit. The hardest part I think would be to widen a set of original fenders to cover the dual wheels like in the pic Bob posted. (thats a great looking truck!)
what the heck do i need a tailgate for aint you seen the latest trend with us rednecks ? i'll jus get me one of them there nets !!!!!!!! i dunno there's also the time issue . im up at 3-3:30 at work by 4:30 at the latest , out till 8:30 , then gone again from 9:45 till 1:30 the again from 2:00 till 6:00 . this is 5days a week and i'm only an hour short on saturday of that . aint a whole lot of time for it .
I think you should go with a vintage tow truck. Just think of all of the junk you could haul home with that.
I don't even wanna think of what I could haul home if I found a wrecker bed
hmmm.. I think I'm already going to be in enough trouble once I get the telephone utility bed on my 52..
after recent events I may have an express box to get rid of.. but not certain yet. I wanna make certain my new utility box is going to look right.

A box truck, you don't see very many vintage trucks with original box bodies on the back. Just think of the stuff you hide in the back. Also, it could double as living quarters when the wife finds out you bought more stuff;
Dang, I completely missed it!! Jon did you score on that telephone box?? You old DAWG!!...thats gonna look too kool!!..,Thank"S BoB j49f2,now thats what I call friendly encouagement!! Keep us posted Jon on the progress..Even rough mock-up!!
hmmm box truck huh ? looks a lot like walfords motor home . might be handy especially if i drag something else home !! naw im thinking and thinking and thinking some more . too much actually . maybe i'll just go with a flatbed . i'd like to get 'er running pdq but ma nature aint cooperating . that way if it's moving i can take the 53 outta service for awhile to do some wiring , brakes , and body work . the thought of selling it creeps in as i get to freaking wound up . once again my freinds have rescued me from disaster . but it sure would look neat like the one in the pic . still gonna keep my eye open for a bed . be nice when the weather breaks then we'll all be busy workin ' not thinkin , and use my vacation time for the trucks . oh you wanna go where sorry no time left dear !!!!!!!!!!!! lol
