Post What heads to use on '95 460 ?

Hi all,
I have a '95 F-250 XLT SC 4X4 Auto od. 135,000 miles
When I took it to my local Ford dealer for a tune up, they had a few problems getting the spark plugs out, and broke them off
not being able to extract the threads. They told me that it may be cheaper and easier to replace the heads than to spend a lot of time putting in helicoils etc...(I know!!)
Being a diehard Ford man, I have a good selection of parts
to choose from. What would be my best option, without too many modifications, other than maybe planing the heads and grinding the valves?

Heads from:

'88 F-250 460

'75 Thunderbird 460

'70 Mercury Cyclone GT 429 4v

Sorry for getting so long.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you,
gregcld

You need heads off a EFI engine unless you plan on going to carburation. If you go with a carb the electronics still have to operate to shift your computor controled E4OD. Im assuming the heads off your 1988 F250 would work...it should have been EFI. Deen

Yes the '88 is fuel injected.
It sounds like the best to go with these heads.
I didn't know I had to use a carb with the others.
Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.

The EFI intake manifold and EFI heads have smaller ports and will not match up with the carbed versions. You'll also find your exhaust manifolds from the 95 truck will not match up with the exhaust ports on the 88 heads, you'll need to go with headers or get 88 exhaust manifolds and then have a muffler shop re-connect your exhaust pipes. Ford made a number of changes on the exhaust porting between 1987 and your 1995 head.

My 1992 EFI 460 has D0VE heads and a fuel injection intake. There is enough material in the heads to port match the two. It's the top of the intake ports thats the problem. It's a lot of work and I would not recommend it but it can be done.

Thanks to all of you for the information.
From what I've learned reading these message boards, I think that I should concider installing Headers.
It sounds like a worthwhile change.
Then I should be able to use the '88 heads.

Thanks,
Greg

one question, not to be rude or anything, but if THEY broke them, THEY should fix or replace the heads, not you. just my 2 cents

I know!
That is a whole different subject. I talked with the service manager today. He said that for $920 (labor only) they would take off the heads, send them to a machine shop to remove broken plugs,
magna flux etc.. ($350 for machine shop) and reinstall.
Plus $300 for head gaskets,
plus plus plus other parts.
I'm going to pay them a visit tomorrow!

You are obligated to pay the originally quoted cost of replacing the spark plugs - Nothing more. If the dealer broke them, thats their problem. There is a reason why we leave certain jobs to the pro's!

Good luck, and don't let those people take advantage of you.

I would fight tooth and nail with the dealer over your deal man. If it is a Ford Dealer call and report them from their phone get their dealer number and let them know you mean buisness if they are a Ford dealer they will not want you turning them in cuz they get rated by the Company "Blue Oval Dealers" hope you get your problem worked out.
