Motor plate question.
I needed a motor plate for my '69 460 as when I got the engine there was not one with it. I scrapped the '79 Bronco’s (D7 on the block) 351M with the motor plate and flexplate thinking that they would not fit on a 460. I went to my local boneyards looking for a 460 plate and was told by a yard that only deals Lincoln parts that I needed a plate from a 68-71 and he had it for $50. I could not find it anywhere else locally. It was pretty tweaked around the pin locations like someone twisted it off so I thought I would try to do better than that online. I searched through the forums and classifieds on this and other sites to see if I could find one for a little less $, a little better shape and check the compatibility since the bolt patterns are the same. I found a post here that stated that someone had used a 351M plate on a 460. I regretted not pulling the plate off before scrapping the 351M (Murphy lives in my pocket and often comes out to kick my butt!). I found a plate that was listed for a 351M-400-429-460, no specific years, and bought it. Upon arrival, I went to install it and lo and behold, it does not fit (Murphy again!). The center hole is oblong and the boss on my crankshaft is bigger than the hole. The code on the plate is D8AE-6A. The bolt hole locations do match up though. My question is could I grind approximately 1 inch out of the center oblong hole to accommodate the larger diameter of the boss of the crankshaft without any ill effects?
Sorry for the long post but wanted to explain exactly what the situation is and also to say that not all of these plates are interchangeable.
Do you mean the spacer plate between the block and transmission?

Yes that's what I mean. That is the description in a manual that I have. I also have heard it called an engine plate, or rear engine plate, or rear motor plate.
. I just used a cutting torch and the old bent up plate as a pattern.
