My girlfriend roped me into looking at her co-workers truck, so I'm looking for any info to point me in the right direction.
Through second had info the problem is as follows:
1997 F-150, long bed, extra cab, engine????
When you step on the gas the truck hesitates for a second then lurches forward. They took it to the shop (I'm guessing the dealer??) which "cleaned the throtle body". It fixed the problem for about three days at a charge of $50.
From what I understand they have had this done multiple times. I know this is little to go on andis likley not accurate, but it's all I've got. I guess I'll start by playing with the TB and linkages. I'm assuming the TB is controled by a cable and not an electric motor.
Yes, the TB is controlled by a cable. (at least my 98 4.6 is) and you can clean it easily yourself in less than an hour. But you are NOT supposed to remove the protective coating on it. It is kinda clear-greenish in color. I doubt you would need the TB cleaned sooner than once a year if that, so don't let the pull the OL "I dunno whats wrong, hey lets clean the TB" on you.
I'd guess it would be more likely a sensor or electronic controling device that is causing the hesitation.
Since cleaning the TB helps the problem for a short term it may be that the chemicals used to clean the port is also cleaning the spark plugs or sounds like the fuel injectors could need a cleaning. Sticky fuel injectors will cause a slight pause since they are opening slowly and then as they unstick and open the fuel pressure releases causing the surge.
