460 thingy

Forgive me if this is a really dumb question, but...

What is this thing? I recently rebuilt the carburetor on my '85 460, and this is between the carb and the intake manifold, with the dashpot to the rear of the engine. Everything works great, but I was just curious about this

Right side up:

Up side down:

Dashpot details:

Couldn't find it in my Haynes and Chilton manuals.

Thanks,

-Mark

Okay I'll say it >

Why didn't you make the photo's *Smaller* before posting them.

Making them about 8 KB is plenty big enough.

Oh Yeah, It's an EGR /spacer plate.

ur lucky thats a square bore egr plate, i got a spread bore, went to buy a new edelbrock manifold and found out i had to have a square bore egr plate, had to spend an extra 100 for a the holley plate cuz i couldnt find that square bore plate anywhere. my advice, clean it up paint it and put it on top of a new edelbrock manifold.

Dennis,

Sorry about the photo size. I'm fighting with MS Photo Editor on an NT system, and it is a less-than-delightful experience.

I've reduced the photo size.

I guess I've never seen an "EGR plate" before; my experience has been some small piping from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold, through an EGR valve. There must be internal porting of the exhaust gasses through the intake manifold, I suppose. Huh. Learn sumpin' new every day.

Thanks,

-Mark

Yepper that's an EGR plate. If you are lucky it is not the aluminum one. The exhaust usually eats thru it an you get an exhaust leak. Ford sells a steel or iron replacement plate without the EGR valve but they won't sell it to you unless you tell them that the motor has been rebuilt and there is an EGR on th intake manifold. However EGR does not hurt performance as it is closed at idle and full throttle.
