I need to rewire my charging system. I was thinking about just taking it to a shop. How much do you think that would set me back? What would a good price be?
You can purchase aftermarket wire harnesses there are a number of distributers out there, painless for one. The only reproduction harnesses I was able to find is Mr. Mustang Inc. who makes them for 64-67 Ford F100's, same wire color codes, and connectors, purchased a couple, one for each of my 65's. It was a matter of unplugging the old harness and plugging in the new. They offered about 5-6 harnessses, I only purchased the alternator harness; cost around $50, the head and taillight harness; ran around $100 each, kinda of expensive. If you intend adding additional circuits at a later date may want to consider the aftermarket setup. Seem to recall couple members mentioning installing the aftermarket kits and were pleased. There is an article in 'classic truck magazine' on the how to install the kits, may be able to locate article on their website. If decide to go with Mr. Mustang, have to call, believe they no longer have a website, if they do, the harnesses were not listed on it.

you could go with a one wire alt set up, then all you need is a pos from the starter sol or the pos post on the battery to the pos term on the alt. very simple and cost effective

I could then ditch the voltage regulator? Just a positive wire from the battery to the alternator and this would not drain the battery? What gage wire should I use? Is running it from the starter sol a better idea?

there would be a small drain on the battery, but it should take about a month to drain it to the piont that it would not start the truck. the reg is built into the alt, just like the 12si, just wired a little different in the alt. ford runs the alt wire to the sol, so i would think it would be the way to go.

A month until the battery is drained. That really doesn't solve my problem. Where can I fond the 12si? I tried acdelco's web site but i couldn't find the alternator.
