A fusable link located in the passangers side engine compartment blew a few days ago. The "Battery Not Charging" light came on after that. I had the fusable link replaced and the electrical system checked as per the suggestion in the owners manual. The electrical system checked out fine. Today the same fusable link blew again. Everything looks normal just before the link blows. Then the gages dip and the "Battery Not Charging" light comes on. Has anyone else seen this problem before?
Also, is the voltage regulator built into the alternator?
After the fusable link was replaced, it lasted about a week before it blew again. The first time was during the day. No lights, no radio, low fan (default), etc. The next time I had lights and radio on. The link blew after about 10 minutes of driving. A mechanic told me that this was a common alternator problem in Ford trucks. He said the alternator overcharges the battery and draws too much current. Guess maybe I'll replace the alternator and find out. Thanks.
Thanks Tim. That's good information. I noticed that the reading on my panel voltmeter was reading close to 15.5V upon acceleration before the link blew for the second time. I'm going to replace the alternator and see what happens. I really don't know what else the problem could be.
