89 F250 460
I have an 89 F250 with 460, EFI. It has been a real workhorse for many years. Lately, we have been experiencing serious problems: Intermitent poor idling, black smoke, and engine stops. Then it is very difficult to get it started again. Took it to the shop and they thought they fixed it by replacing a relay, claning spark plugs, etc. The problem reappeared a few months later but by morning the symtoms were gone. We are told that it can be tough with intermitent problems etc. etc... Has anyone else had these type of problems? I am thinking it could be a sensor or ecu, but not sure where to start.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Possibly fuel pressure regulator has a blown diaphragm. Pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator while the engine is running (CAREFULLY), if fuel comes out of the vacuum line, it is your problem. Be careful where you are pointing the vacuum line when you do this!
