I thought this was interesting. Despite the fact the V10 was rated higher from the factory, the chassis dyno test results do not reflect that much difference? The 460 prevails in torque and at a much lower RPM. Is that good or bad, being at a lower RPM like that?

My own personal dyno results with a 3.5" cat back (stock cat with 2.5" outlet still in place) and a removed air filter at the dyno being the only mods. 105* humid day on top of that.

Interesting numbers........but I'm going from speedo readings with similar loads going up Baker grade (between Vegas and LA)......my current v10 was at least 15 MPH faster up the grade. Only after doing the Edelbrock system on the '85 was it able to tach out in 2nd gear and get me to 50 MPH....previously 35MPH was tops. I also had to purchase a 4 core radiator to keep the temp guage down...it never overheated but made me nervous.
Sure to raise some controversy but the higher RPM capabilty and being able to "horsepower" up a grade may be why I like the 10 better.
The 460 has some huevos down low but sure seems to run outta breath quickly.
i dont know for sure but i asked this question here a couple of years ago asking the hp and tq numbers for my 95 f250 4x4 460 and i was told stock was 230hp and 380ish lb ft torque

Sounds familiar.........245 and 395 rings a bell also (maybe the '97 460?)

Living on the So Cal high desert and having run the Baker grade numerous times myself. You must be pulling a lot of weight. I run the grade at 55+ in the center lane pulling a 7k 5th wheel loaded with another 1k of "stuff." I have a 3.07 rear end in it and that high of a ratio forces me to run in 2nd gear. I am not sure what it would do with a 3.90 or 4.11 in the rear. But the high temps is a concern.

Formerly from Santa Clarita here (Newhall)
11' Western Wilderness slide in camper and 26' Nordic day cruiser with BBC.
Camper was maybe 3,000 wet (???) Boat/trailer was around 6,000.
I'm actually impressed that you can pull a 3.07 gear....like I said, when the '85 was stock with the 4.10's; 35....maybe 40....was all I could pull during the steepest part of the climb. (I was running 33" tires)
The big aftermarket 4 core was a DRAMATIC improvement for that '85. (the '89 460 and current V10 NEVER get hot it seems and I've had the V10 idling in 120* heat with a/c on at the boat ramp for long periods.)
Also had an '87 GMC with 454 and 4.11's and it actually ran about the same WITHOUT the camper!!......and it always was pegging the temp gauge.
stock for stock theres no comparison between the two, especially the 362 hp 457 ft lbs 3v v-10...but if you spend the money to mod a 460, the extra cubic inches shine easily over 550 ft lbs and 400+ horsepower and a very flat torque curve
Stock the v-10 all the way, I have a 97 cc/lb mass air 7.5 and my bro has a 01 cc/lb v10 his truck pulled way better stock. But after we both did bank's hedder's ,cat back, K&N fipk Im right on his bumper now. But he still get's like 1-2 mpg's more on the highway towing the same trailers w/similar loads my truck does also get a little warm on long hill's and his never move's.My truck 4.10's his 4.30's both autos with 35's and lifted.

Hmmm, very good and unbiased comparison from first hand experience. Thanks for the information.
It would seem that your stock cooling system should be more than adequate to keep the temperature normal. I have personally never had high temperatures with my truck? It may be time to check some things: (1)The radiator may need to be replaced or flushed. (2)The clutch on the fan may not be operating correctly, which can make a big difference. (3)The thermostat could be changed to a 180*, preferrably a high flow unit like the one Mr. Gasket makes.
Now, back to the debate. V10 seems to have a strong lead, which is to be expected. "They dont make'em like they used to", is usually for a good reason.
I have flushed the radiator , new t-stat and put in waterwetter but it made no diff, Only after i put on a new radiator cap on did it make a big diff. It does not get hot but it goes between the R and M in the NORMAL.

Buy a good "hard wired" temp gauge and really find out what your coolant temperature is. Temperature by letter is a joke. At what point does NOR>MA<L translate into "240* coolant temperature" and "You got a big problem here!" ?? I would have fried my engine in triple digit temps back in 2001 except for a good, accurate temp gauge and Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I now run seperate gauges for ambient air, engine and transmission fluids.
I've worked with, worked, and loved 460's since the 70's. We worked the hell out of them. As an ag-engineer for a seed company I had a '79 F350 dually flat bed that, hooked to a tri-axle Fruehauf gooseneck with a 300 bushel Parker low-profile gravity box on the deck, pulled an average of 52 29,700# gross loads to the elevator per year for four or five years. That's average load numbers. MANY loads exceeded 30,000# (licensed to 32K). We used to put F250HD's in front of 3600# trailers with 13,000# combines on them. There's a couple of the reasons I've got Clyde.
At 3-5,000 miles a year pulling my fifth wheel it does a great job and I have no complaints. Clyde is paid for, insurance and plates cheap and it's fun working a 23 year old truck to make it earn it's keep.
If wishes were horses .... this guy would be pullin' with a 3-valve V-10, 5 spd Torqueshift and a set of 4.30's.

I have one brother with a 93 Ford with a 460 automatic and one with a 99 Ford with a V10 and a automatic. The 460 seems to have more power than the V10. And both trucks get the same fuel mileage.
