a 460 would definately benefit from head porting especially if theres other performance parts involved. Thing is, if ford still made the 460 and wanted to bump its factory output to 340hp they could have easily done so they just didnt and wont. isntead of making a better 460 like they should have they introduced the v10. i have a friend with the v10 and it dont get much better mileage than a 96 460 that i used to have.
I have a 1995 F350 crew cab with a V8-460, E4OD transmission, and 3.55 rear end normal driving 10-11MPG, highway 14MPG. My new '08 F250 crew cab V10-415, torqshift, 4.10 rear gets maybe 1/2 MPG more, both trucks weigh a little over 6000 lbs. In other words no noticable difference in MPG.
I ported and polished the heads on my 460. I also put in oversized stainless steel full flow racing valve at the same time. This made the most pronounced improvement in performance than any of the other mods I had made to this engine. I have a close friend with a v10 and was never able to stay with him on long grades. Now I am on his bumper all of the way.
Funny thread!!!............Go axe it in the V10 forums and see what answers you get!!
I will agree with the statements regarding modifications.....the 460 has a fairly decent aftermarket and can be built to the hilt. If you want a mid 90's truck that you want to "tinker" with then by all means go 460.
Stock for stock: I have owned an '85 460 4 barrel with c6 in a reg cab with 4.10's; an 89 460 CC with 5 speed and 4:10's, and my current '01 V10 CC with 4.30's.
There is no way ANY of the stock 460's will touch an '00 and later V10. PERIOD
The carbed 460 was breathed on with the full Edelbrock cam, intake....used the pre-70 timing set and Thorely headers...only then would it pull.
Right on about MPG..........V10's get 1-3 MPG better but Super Duties are much heavier trucks.
Head gasket story is 100% BS..........except for plug ejecting issues, Ford Modular motors are as durable if not more durable than ANYTHING Ford has ever produced.
Post #21 from WB was a very honest post........he had to mod his 460 to keep up with a V10...........that about sums it up.

I think you may be surprised at what your '08 weighs compared to your '95.
Regardless, you have nearly 100 more HP, 50 pounds more torque, higher numerical gearing AND you still get slightly better economy!!!
I have owned an 86 & 94 F250 460 with 4.10s and a 4spd and 5spd. I now own a 2000 Excursion and 2000 F250 both V10 auto and 4.30s.
My 460s rarely broke 10mpg. I had no mechanical issues other than brakes and a water pump gasket that blew on my 460s. Both 460s had decent power, felt great around town empty but lacked real grunt when towing heavy. Both were fairly stock. Both had after market mufflers and air intakes.
My V10s have been excellent. Before lifting my F250 I was able to get 14.4mpg, now get 12.25 with 35s. My Excursion can easily get 16mpg on the highway. Both have been perfect, no repairs and both are around 100,000 miles. Great power. Seat of the pants way more impressive than my 460s.
The first V10 I drove was a 1999 F250 2wd. I was not impressed at all. I made fun of V10s for a long time. I planned on owning my 460 forever. One day I saw my F250 sitting on a dealer lot. I was hoping it was a diesel. Got to the dealer and found out it was a V10. Decided to take it for a drive anyways and was blown away. i bought right there, that day and love it.
1999 V10s had 295hp.
2000-2004 had 310hp.
2005-2008 have 367hp.
Gearing in the V10 makes a big difference also. I have driven 5.4L V8s and V10s with 3.73 and was not impressed. 4.30s are awsome and net the same mileage.
my point exactly, in stock trim the 460 is nothing at all to shout about other than its a strong good running motor with lots of torque. but, if ford would have done what they should have, they could have kept the 460, updated everything to produce numbers like what the v10 is. the v10 guys can say what they want and they will cuz they luv their v10s, but the v10 is no comparison to the 460 when you start throwing money at it because you can do alot more with a 460. for example, any 460 block can accept a crank that will stroke it to 540+ ci. v10s cant. you can turbo, supercharge or otherwise a 460 just like a v10 also, thats usually an argument i get from v10ers, they can buy a bolt on supercharger kit, well so can we. and i also have to remind diesel fellas that it takes a big turbo and all kinds of chips and programmers for their diesels to put out the kind of power that a nicely built naturally aspirated big block does. Now diesels are impressive machines and i like them too, if i ever have a gigantic boat or 5th wheel to pull and i still want ok mileage, i may get one, not that a 460 wouldnt tow either of those just fine because it would. its all preference i guess, personally i cant stand the sound of the v10 and all diesels sound the same to me but a healthy 460 or fe motor is as good as it gets. to the original poster i would suggest keeping your trusty ol 460 if you like gas
Gee, my 86 with the 460 4V and C6, 3:55 gear, pulls my 30 ft 5th wheel quite well. It will climb 7 mountains grade on Rte. 322 in PA going toward State College at 35 mph in second with the trailer loaded (weighed it on the return trip, 16120 lbs. for the rig). Fuel ecomony, before RFG and E85 was ~ 10 empty ~ 7.5 towing. Guy with the same trailer, 454 Chevy dually, 4:10 gear asked how I did on that grade, he was 22 mph in first gear maxed out on RPM. I wonder how it will do once I finish the EFI E4OD conversion?
I thought this was interesting. Despite the fact the V10 was rated higher from the factory, the chassis dyno test results do not reflect that much difference? The 460 prevails in torque and at a much lower RPM. Is that good or bad, being at a lower RPM like that?

My own personal dyno results with a 3.5" cat back (stock cat with 2.5" outlet still in place) and a removed air filter at the dyno being the only mods. 105* humid day on top of that.
Hello all;
With all of the numbers flying around I have one quick question. Does anybody have the HP and torque numbers for the different 80's and 90's 460's. I was under the impression that the last couple of years of its life showed a little stronger version.
