Ok, believe it or not, this forum is the first place I've heard of problems with the e4od (more problems than usual). What I want to know is, are a few people with lemons making a lot of noise ? or are they really crap? b/c whats happening here is a lot of potential buyers of early '90's trucks will be scared off, so lets NOT compare them to the c-6, which is virtually indestructable if taken care of, but rather, does it do the job it was designed for. How many out there have over 100000? I know mine does so there must be more.
My 90 was E4OD and never gave me a lick of trouble. I think some people are inclined to repeat what they hear more than what the experience.
Do some E4ODs fail? Sure. Early, yhea probably, but I bet plenty of AODs have too. I wouldn't think twice about owning another E4OD truck. After a certain age/mileage you're talking about a rebuild on any transmission.
the factory original E40D in my truck worked great untill 135,000, then started slipping. it was used very hard by the guy I got it from and by me, lots of farm work in KY and the heavy hauling that goes with it.
the only problem I have had is remembering that you get what you pay for. I bought a cheap rebult tranny to replace the original one and it didnt last very long...
I have 135k on my E4OD. So far so good, but as far as I know it's never seen any hard use. The truck does have a hitch and trailer wiring harness (5 wire) but I don't know how often it was used.
The biggest issue I had was that when I bought my bronco, the Reverse was gone in the E4OD. I came to find out later that the transfer case wasnt holding in gear anymore so I am not sure the E4OD was originally the problem anymore. The issue I have with the E4OD isnt the tranny, but the serious lack of support by the aftermarket for the DIY weekend projects on the rebuilding of this tranny. I would have felt alot more confidence in the tranny if there had been some support otherwise it is a costly repair bill or costly new tranny with very little guarantee.
The E4OD in my '91 Bronco is all original, except for the filter, and it has 242K miles on it. Still works perfectly.
I just sold my 2000 Expedition (in order to put the Bronco back on the road) with 154K on it and the original 4R100 (same as the E4OD) was still working great.
I'll take the 351/E4OD combo over the 302/AOD combo I used to have any day. I'm over 160k on the clock now with this one (don't know if either has been rebuilt, but I don't think so), and it's night and day compared to the 302/AOD that got rebuilt at 93k/103k, respectively, and was a heap of junk when the engine went again at 145k and I got rid of the truck. Not that my 351 doesn't need any attention right now, but it's still running strong. It's just too dang cold out right now, truck doesn't fit in the garage, and funds are low right now anyway until work picks back up some.
I happen to LIKE e-trannies because they can (sometimes) let you know there's a small problem before it becomes a catastrophic one. That, and the computer helps to protect the tranny from idiots.
All I know, knock on wood chips, is my truck was definitly a beater before I got it and I had the tire shop pull the T pan and change the fluid and stuff and the mechanic said it all looked good. That's 80k+ all original operates well. Now that I said that, something's sure to go wrong so I take it back.......
