One thing I have noticed is that after a regen, my MPGs seem to go up. It is as if the DPF has been purged, allowing more flow....I guess this makes sense to me with my very pedestrian understanding of this machine.
Yesterday I did a HWY trip from Gloucester to Suffolk then back and then to Norfolk and back to Gloucester. This is approx 200 hwy miles. the CPU MPGs was 24.2. The hand calc for this tank was 24. This was in an empty truck running 60. My mileage seems to have increased a bit on the hwy after airing up my tires from 50 to 70lbs.
I am still getting about 17.5 for city driving both hand calc'ed and per the CPU.
I very much enjoy the truck and (knock on wood) hope it stays as is.
Below are my complaints:
-The dash storage tray should be rubberized so cell phones, etc. do not slide around on the hard plastic.
-With the XLT package and non-bucket seats, the 2 cup holders up front are way too few. Especially since the driver's side one acts as an arm rest
-Change stored on the little change holder thingey near the brake controller rattles and drives me nuts.
-My radiator overflow tank top was loose and radiator fluid steamed out of it.
I am definitely a diesel guy now. Going from this truck to my Jeep or Xterra is difficult. I am used to the monstrous tq and have a hard time driving our gas vehicles (all manual trannys).
I am interested to hear more ideas on this subject. I am going up to a 48' 18000# race car trailer this year and have concerns about my Duramax being safe @ this weight so I am seriosly looking @ the F450 with the "high capacity tow package" and 4:88 gears. I drove the truck as most people here seem to love it. I thought the ride was more than adequate especially since it was empty. I haven't heard any comments yet on people using this tow package soany thoughts on this will be appreciated.

Not to take this thread too far off topic, but look below for a thread titled "how does it compare", there are some excellent posts in there from firehawk198, who has the same truck you are considering -- infact you should just do a search on all his posts as he gives a very fair opinion of that set up...

Agreed. The 7.3 powerstroke, and the 12 valve cummins are the most fuel efficeint engines I know of. That being sad, I've heard even better numbers a couple times. EG a 12v cummins getting consistent 27mpg(canadian imperial gall) and the stroke getting 25.
Cheating, one time i drove a 1990 idi 7.3, and in 5th gear(5 spd), i ran 20 miles at 50 km/h, about 6 times, and worked out to 40 mpg!!! Thats what it'll do , at 1000 and barely any wind resistance....
Still, keep in mind that these 2 engines mentioned, are older engines that have been worn in.... mabye the 6.4 will be just as good once it gets 100k on it...

I might have increased about 1/2 mpg better. I have 9700 miles and the best I have gotten around town is 12.5 - 13 around town. I just dove about 200 miles of highway tonight and the computer said I was AVERAGING 17.1 when I got home. I still have a lot of driving to finish this tank of fuel. I hand calculate every tank at fill up. The computer is usually showing better mileage between .5 - 1 mpg.

I agree. You can reset the computer all day long going 45 mph on the freeway and you will show over 20. After that tank is done, you will end up showing your true numbers. Believe me, i have 2 supercharged trucks and i reset my computer on the freeway and it shows 19+. By the time the tank is empty, it reads 12-13. I had a 6.0 that on a good day got 17 maybe once. And that was going 55 mph to work, with an SCT and 4"exhaust, and egr delete.

P.S. If you actually read what I wrote, I did not say that my entire tanks are getting 22MPGs
If a person is looking to see what MPG they are getting on the freeway why is it discounted by others if they follow this process: get on the freeway, zero the CPU, drive a reasonable (long) distance and check the CPU prior to exiting. is there any other way to see what your truck is running on the freeway if your not burning a whole tank of fuel in one trip on the freeway and hand calculating. That would be the best way but isnt always possible. I think of it as wanting to know what MPG my truck is getting as i am cruising down the freeway, not accelerating on, decelerating off, or whatever. I had a fuel flow meter (i know its a little different) on my boat and this is how i determined my fuel consumption as i was cruising vs hotdogging around. obvoiusely, there are other factors that come in to play: weather, terrain, speed etc.

Hi everyone. I started this thread and am checking back in after about 6 months.
I now have 10,000 miles on the truck. It runs like a top. No issues yet.
My average CPU calc of a full tank of fuel is ~17.5MPGs. If I do straight city I get, at worst, 16. If I do mostly hwy (65 and under) I average close to, if not, 20MPGs. My hand calcs are within .4 of the CPU.
We have done full tank runs on the hwy and averaged >22MPGs, for an entire tank. This is all hwy and running 65 or under.
To recap - I have a job 2, F250, 3.73, maual, 4x4, with the stock Scorpions.
We have a trip upcoming that will take us across country and back. It will be over 6K miles with a mixture of hwy, city, and trail riding. I will report back afterwards with my mileage and thought.

-The rear window seal (on the inside) seems to be popping out. I will probably need to take this in for a warranty fix.
-The front grill (while stylistically nice) seems kinda cheap and plasticky and that is may break off when closing the hood
I'm glad you brought this post back up, 'cause I went back a page or so and saw the posts about 7.3s etc., and thought I'd relate what a group of us saw on our latest trip, all driving in a caravan, here's the trucks:
(all are longbed 4x4 ext cabs, other than the '01 Ford 4x4 SBox SC)
'07.5 Chevy Dmax/Ally (new emissions) w/ gooseneck LQ 2 horse (steel) (hauling 1 horse)
'01 Ford 7.3 w/ pop up truck camper and 2 horse bumper pull (hauling 2 horses)
'07 Ford 6.0 w/ 3k camper and 3 horse (Al) bumper pull (hauling 2 horses + gear)
'08 Ford 6.4 w/ pop up camper and 3 horse (steel) bumper pull hauling 1 horse. (3.55 gears)
Sure this is a comparison with different weights and driving styles, but we all went at the same time of day, down the same roads, towing more similar than not loads, at basically the same speed (caravan, remember?). 323 mile round trip, plenty of hills and twistys.

It is usually within .5 mpg higher than my hand calculations. I have seen as high as 17 when I filled up on the highway and drove the entire tank without stopping. This of course was with the cruise control on. But as far as combination highway/ city driving I have recorded close to 14.5. I live in the Clear Lake City - Houston area and there are red lights on just about every cross street.

Looks like you drive about 70 mph + . I know it sounds silly but if u drive over 65 it drops pretty quick. At least for me anyway.
