Need some info from all you 5th wheel or towing experts. I have a 08 F250SD 6.4 with 275/70 18" "E" rated. What size and load rating can I increase too, still retaing the 18" wheel, to go to a wider tire with equal or greater load rating.
The reasoning (which may be wrong) is to go to a wider tire to give me a more stable ride when towing my 5th wheel. (something like the dual rear wheel concept without the duallys) I do not want to change the lift (suspension wise) obviously unless a bigger tire brings it up a little.
a wider tire on you rim will probably crown & wear in the middle & probably have more sidewall flex making the problem worse. I dont beleive they make anything higher than an e rated 18 inch tire I could be wrong though. if you want a strong tire & dont mind spending the money go up to a 19.5 setup from rickson (http://www.ricksontruck.com) you can go up to a g rated commercial truck tire they claim these will last twice as long as an lt tire.if it`s just an unstable feeling & the tires arent overloaded airbags can be a big help to correct this.

From my experience, A wider tire with a lower profile will suit you fine. Are you trying to go for a look like the new Semi-truck rear replacments? Just curious how wide you are going?
No unstable feeling. and not looking for a different look. Was just looking to increase my load capacity. My 5th wheel is within the current tires load limits but I quess I'm looking at increasing the capacity for safety. I looked at the Rickson site and that obviously is a good way to go but adding the cost of the rims and the tires is a little above my budget for now, but you were right it is a good setup.
You will be hard press to find anything in a 18" tire right now. GoodYears have been on back order for months. I ended up with some factory take offs for mine and had the same conri-craps . You may have to look into some 20" if you want a wider profile.
Go to any of the tire web sites and you can find size and load rate.

yes they are quite expensive I lucked out & found a set of 19.5 vision rims on e-bay for $400.00 Im waiting to get the money to buy the tires. cant wait to try them out this summer.
You will need to go to a wider wheel if you go with a wider tire, looking for stability. If you go to a wider tire and keep the stock wheel the tire will have to narrow to the width of the wheel, this will actually cause the tire to get higher and be more unstable.
Your best bet, and I'm sure nobody has any out yet, would be to get a higher rated tire. "E" is the most common for light truck applications, I now they make a "G" in 16" but I haven't seen any larger wheel sizes yet.
Nitto seems to me to be the best for producing a wider range of sizes and keeping an "E" rating. How about a Nitto Terra Grappler in a 285/65/18? I have 285/70/17 GoodYear Wrangler Silent Armors on mine but they are "D" rated. But I do no 5th wheel towing and they do have a high weight rating. The 285's look considerably wider than the 265's and fit my stock wheels nicely. It's just appearance but they do look nice, needed no leveling kit, and perform well.
