I have a 1996 Ford Ranger 2.3L. I just changed my spark plugs and wires, and my ignition coil or coil pack. I thought that would eliminate the subaru like sound that I hear when I initially drive the car and the rpms reach above 3000. Changing the coil pack to a new one eliminated a lot of the shaking that would happen when the engine would be idling. It seems like it takes the engine like 5 minutes of driving before it stops sounding like subaru like engine when I am at idle.
A year and half ago I had my engine block replaced because it lost compression so I know its not loss of air compression.
I did realize that I have 8 spark plugs and wires and that there was another coil pack. So 2 coilpacks and 4 wires going into the engine on each side. I am going to replace the other coil pack and see if that fixes it because just replacing the other coil pack made a major difference.
If you suspect a coilpack, why not consider having it bench tested, before replacing it.
Do you have a check engine light lit????
If so, have your favorite autoparts store scan the computer for trouble codes & post ALL the code numbers found.
Are you certain you have the new plug wires routed to the correct plug & the plug wires dressed & in their wire looms as the factory had them????
The Ranger 2.3l didn't get an 8 plug head until '89. I don't understand the reference to sounding like a Subaru? Are you saying it runs rough, is loud, or just has a funky sound? A cracked exhaust manifold will make a strange noise that will ultimately go away when the engine has run and warmed up a while. Also, aside from eroding the electrode differently, it shouldn't matter which plug is on which side, the double platinum number is the same for both sides, both plugs fire simultaneously, same heat range.
i was just kiddin', i really wasn't sure if they had the same heat range. or not.
however i thought they were like the datsun 8 plug and they use 2 different heat ranges. and the firing order is slightly offset.
