electric pumps are good for priming/bleeding...no cranking, heating up starter. stanadyne's fuel manager line would be my choice with CAT filters, filter head mounted fuel heater and filter head mounted hand primer pump. same idea as tim with roughly 30 micron pre pump and 2 micron post pump. is there a block off plate to go where the mech pump mounts? or do you have to make your own? this is an idea of mine that i've had for a while. i would do the whole system until the mech pump went out. i am looking into doing an auxillary filter right now. i have a filter head, just need to mount it and run lines.

A freeze plug is used to plug the fuel pump hole.

oh yeah, one think i dont like about stanayne's stuff is the way the filters mount to the filter head. the filter slides up on the "post" then there is a big plastic lock ring that screws then locks...feels like a radiator cap. great for ease of filter changes, but after it's mounted, it can still be easily moved. just a little play when you push or pull laterally on the filter. just kinda worries me about the seal.

Skitt, are you thinking like the setup that a C9 cat has?

if you are talking about pre '07 C9 then it would be similar. every truck/machine/motor home has a unique setup. the engine comes with its own filter then most OEM's will put in a pre-filter somewhere on their chassis prior to CAT's transfer pump

probably all i will do now (because i have the parts on hand already from my misc. stock pile) is run off the fuel pressure regulator to a low micron secondary/final filter mounted hopefully under the hood, then back to the heads. i like CAT filters because working for them i have cut enough of them open to see that they are superior to most others. donaldson and baldwin are good. dont like fleetguard.

ps sorry about the late reply on that

SKit, have you looked at dieselsites CPR fuel return. They have pre filter and such. Reminds of the FASS system. Take a look. I wonder if this is a worthwhile mod.

that link didn't work but i googled dieselsite cpr and it came up with a 700 dollar kit. for that money i would rather spread the money out and come up with my own custom setup.

if you had to choose, would you put a higher micron pre-filter before the transfer pump to protect it, or a secondary lower micron filter after the oem filter so the injectors get super clean fuel?

Good question. I'd imagine I would put it before the transfer because how can the fuel get dirty again?

But it wouldn't make sense to put a 2 micron filter before the stock filter, I'm not sure what rating it is. However, the bottom line is to have the cleanest fuel possible to the injectors.

It would be nice to find a good setup that is not extremely difficult to make. I agree about the CPR. Thats a lot of money.

I need to sit down some time a figure this out. If only we didn't have two tanks.

buy a fuel filter head from any number of places. make your own hoses or go to a hydraulics shop. mix in some fittings, maybe a hand primer and/or better than stock fuel heater (probably from same place filter head came from). endless possibilities if you make your own. shouldn't be too hard to make. whatever head you get, find out what filter goes on it then do an xref on baldwin.com or somewhere else and you should be able to find a number of possibilities for differet filters with or w/o water separators and different filter ratings.

OK after reading the setup on Tims I/C page about 5 times it makes more sense. I like the setup he uses. At first I was somewhat intermidated about replacing the lines in the valley and such but it seems to a very doable job.

Would you keep the metal lines too?

I wonder what that setup cost? I'm thinking about 250$? (Most of the cost would be in the SD pump)

Is it worth it to do this mod?
