Looking to replace my windshield on my 1976 F-100, but I'm worried about the original chrome trim being damaged or new trim that's hard to find. Several windshield shops said they could only replace it using a black rubber gasket. Can I reuse the original trim if it's not to badly damaged during removal or is there somewhere I can purchase new custom trim to fit my year of truck? Any recommendations?
It really shouldnt be that hard to remove the trim without damage. If your windshild weatherstripping is super hard, you could remove the old windshield yourself, by cutting the rubber weatherstrip on inside of the cab such that you can push the windshild out. Once the windshild is out, you can surgically remove the trim. There are plenty of sources that carry new weatherstrip with the grooves for the trim that you can provide for your windshild installer.
I got mine through one of the site sponsors (broncograveyard.com) in an entire weatherstrip kit. however, I would never want to steer anyone away from the other site sponsors, as I have heard only good things from all of them, so I just do a quick search, and pick which would be best for you!
Are you talking about the wide chrome trim around the window or the narrow plastic chrome inside the groove of the weather strip? I assume you are talking about the wide trim, since it's a 76. 77-79 went with the narrow plastic chrome strip. Dennis Carpenter sells the wide chrome, but expensive. So, be careful and save yours.
The last time I had my windshield replaced, I took it to a buddy of mine who happens to worik in a glass shop. I asked him about my chrome trim and he said if the installer is careful he can remove it without damage, and the I watched him remove my trim and put it right back on with my new windshield. most glass shops will tell you they will have to order new trim due to damage on removal, but don't believe them cause they are trying to get more money out of you. It pays to have friends in the glass business.
The weatherstripping I've been able to source, but what about the narrow chrome trim that resides inside of the windshield stripping...I checked the sponsors and an few others and I guess I'm missing it...anyone have a good source for the narrow chrome trim?
sorry mil1ion I was talking about the wide chrome trim when I wrote my post but after reading it over again I realized I did not mention the wide trim. That is what I have on my truck is the wide trim and It is salvagable if you're careful.
Along these lines, I need the short, I'm guessing about 1" that goes on the top of the windshield with the wide chrome. I'm assuming you would call it a connector? There is about a 1" gap in the top side of mine and don't know where to find it.
