Thanks for the advise. Upon closer inspection the drivers side hub was not disengaging. After a few choice words and a quick service (removale and lube) chunking sound disapperd. this "auto / lock thing "is strange what ever happened to just lock or free.
I had a thunking and a screeching sound in revesre. took tire off. the caliper was shot becuase the was only one brake pad and the piston on the caliper was rubbing on the rotor. dont know where the other brake pad went lol. just got the truck a month ago from a dealership.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but the auto/lock hubs use vaccuum to lock and the lock/free are manual lock.
2000 f250 auto hubs 4x4 v10 auto trans ext cab short box.
Almost immediately from the time we bought it new 01/01/01 we would get this thunk, when pulling into or out of a parking spot.
3-4 trips to the dealer found nothing. We just got used to it. This month we decided to take it in to the dealer as there has been a strange noise coming from the engine compartment and the shift on the fly 4x4 was struggling to engage when the dash switch was turned to 4high.
The diagnosis was;
The auto hub vacuum seals were shot, both ball joints were shot and the control arm. Pretty spendy.
Weird noise is gone, thunk is gone and 4x4 shifts fine.
I do most of the work on my 89 f150 but the 250 has been trouble free
minus one "oxygen idle motor"? I don't even have a Chiltons book for it.
We've been driving this truck for 7 yrs and it has been great. It has had a fairly easy life so far, very little hauling and off road stuff. It is North Idaho however and smooth pavement is hard to picture. I think we got shafted on the ball joints but they can be greased now and 7 years is 7 years.
Absoutely. I can be a maximum of 70' from the front bumper of my truck to the back of my last trailer. I'm sitting at 64'6". It will be closer when I get my bigger boat this year I hope.
As long as you stay with what your truck is rated to tow. That limits what you can tow in doubles. If it is more than max, you can't tow it. Well you can until you get in a wreck. Around here that is something the look at close.
