Hello im new here..and i have to say alot of you guys know your stuff... learned alot reading through the post..but i did not fully find what i was looking for..so maybe you can help me out if i ask the right question..or a dumb one
OK.. i have done about 5 460 engin swaps in to 78-79 broncos and pick ups.. all the engines we used were pretty much out of Lincons...which i am guessing are internally balanced??? so it is safe to use the 360/390 fly wheel on it?? today i had a guy stop buy who is doing a swap..and he has an engine out of a truck.. not sure the year of the truck or the engine...but he said it is a truck engine...and it has the weight on the spacer behind the crank dampner...which means his is externally balanced??? so would it be a bad idea to use a 360/390 flywheel on this engine???? is there a spec. that you can get to have the 360/390 flywheel balanced?? could you take the flex plate weight and have it put on the flywheel...as long as it is in the same spot...to balance the flywheel??? are there specific years or 460 that are internally balanced and externally balanced...or is it just truck engines that are externally balanced?? well any light you could shed on this subject would be appreciated...thanks alot..and im glad i found this forum
Pretty much the 78 and older 460's are internally balanced, the 79 and newer are external. Ford didnt put a standard behind any of the internally balanced 460's, but they did in the 80's on the external 460's, so you dont have to use a 360/390 flywheel, you should be able to find one for the external balanced 460.
thanks alot...that makes sence *smacks head* only problem i know of with the 460 flywheel is that its thicker..and a friend had problems with the 79 bronco transmission..the pressure plate was hitting inside the bell housing...but i guess that will have to be delt with thanks again!!!
