Int/ext balance

I always thought that 351m and 400 engines were externally balanced. While checking out flex plates (for auto trans) I found two. One for internal balance and one with 28oz weight for exernall balance.

Did they actually come both ways?

28oz

All 351m/400 and 351c's are 28oz balance from the factory.

There's only one 351M/400 C6 flexplate.

D1AZ-6375-A .. C6 Flexplate - 164 teeth / Obsolete

1971/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars 400 / 1975/79 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars 351M*

1977/79 F100/350 351M/400 / 1978/82 Bronco 351M/400 / 1980/82 F150/350 351M/400.

*Some 1975/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars with 351M's also came with C4's and FMX's.

Yeah, by the numbers. But actual dimensions and balance are the same. Drop a 302(28oz) flexplate next to a 351c flexplate. The Same. Now the 351m/400 flexplate is different, but still 28 oz balance. Now if you had the rare 400 with the small block bolt pattern you could use a 28oz 302 flexplate. You sorta run the flexplate your transmission calls for. All 351m/400 and 351C are 28oz balanced thou, unless you change that.

Well great, I'm confused on a higher level now. Heh, heh. I still don't understand why NAPA offers two plates for the same engine (400ci), one without weight and one with. As I recall the one I'm using has a small weight on it, I think that would correspond to the 28oz. I have the standard large bell housing and a C6.

While I'm at it, the harmonic balancers were different originally for 351m,400. I think now you can only get one part number but I've read using a 351m on a 400 requires rebalance.

What you got for that number man.

Thanx all

Beartracks: Have you found a flexplate for your buggy yet? I have one that's in not too bad a shape - came off my (RIP) '79 Bronco. 400, C6, 164 Teeth, 28oz external balance. I'll never use it as long as my left knee holds out... I'm a die hard stick shift man.

PM me with your address....just cover the shipping cost.

Well actually I'm just trying figure out if there's a difference somewhere. I'll try looking up the part at Summitt racing.
