DPF smoke

Hi everyone,

I just was referred to this site. I have an '08 6.4 stroker that at 17,000 miles has developed a huge smoking problem at the beginning of the DPF regeneration cycle. It smokes like a house afire for about 15 or 20 seconds. My dealer just shrugs his shoulders. I know others are having this problem also at various mileages. This is very obnoxious to drivers following when it happens.

Has anyone heard of a fix for this? I can't imagine it being anywhere other than the DPF itself or the computer. Thanks!

Larry

The only fix I know of is for the outside temperature to warm up. If the exhaust system is cold when it starts you will get that until the extra fuel burns and warms it to the point of a better burn. At least that is the way I've heard it.

Thanks. Mine just started doing this. But both times it's done it, I had driven it at least 50 miles before it happened. The exhaust system had to be at normal operating temperature when it happened.

What color is the smoke. Blue means it is overloaded with fuel, black means the DPF is cracked. They absorb water so if it is cold then you will get white smoke which is just the water buring off.

Unless those 50 miles were loaded, it wouldn't matter. The DOC needs to be at least 600F before all additional fuel is burned. The white smoke is vaporized fuel. Ford needs to adjust the rate of initial injection so it doesn't overload the DOC.

Correct but the fuel burns off as a bluish smoke. These things hold an amazing amount of water. Either blue or black smoke is a problem. If it is just white smoke (steam) for the first 30 seconds or so then it is water and completley normal in cooler weather. I recently left a job with a large american truck manufacturer where I was a performance engineer. I came here out of boredom to help out so I am not 100% sure of what you may be seeing. If it is a blueish smoke, and fuel is burning off, then ford needs to fix this problem asap or DOC degradation will occur much sooner than anticipated

The smoke is white in the scenario he is talking about unless his is having an actual problem. Mine does it and I've seen others doing it too. Big billows of white smoke for a mile plus or minus in city traffic conditions. Mostly under acceleration, once up to speed it is still there but in much smaller quantity.
I've always just assumed it was water and fuel burning off together. Was a bit scary the first time I saw it though. Has done it 3 or 4 times total now.

Well then with blue smoke I would take it to the dealer now. That is very bad for the DOC, DPF and fuel economy. Unfortunatly i have found that most dealers do not have a solid understanding of the new emissions systems. Either way, keep taking it to dealers until it is resolved. You do not want to drive it like this as the overfueling will cause the DOC to degrade faster than usual or even plug.

Welcome to FTE, Sounds like you have a out of the ordinary problem and a good dealer should be able to address it. You may have a DPF issue or an injector issue. What is the build date of your truck.

Explain DOC please. That's a new one on me. Thanks!

Thanks. Without going out through the blizzard to the shed to look, I believe it's early April of 07. Does that make a difference?

Run your finger around teh inside of your tail pipe (when it is cold) If it is black or you can see black soot in the tailpipe you have a defective DPF causing your problem.

DOC = Diesel Oxidation Catalyst. This is the part of the dpf that reacts (exotherm) with the hydrocarbons (fuel) that are injected and creates the heat needed to oxidize carbon (soot).
