With few exceptions, 2007 diesel emission standards require a Diesel Particulate Filter in the exhaust system, regeneration is the process by which the DPF cleans its self similar to a self cleaning oven. This process sometimes needs extra fuel injected into the exhaust stream to accomplish.

The EPA has put new regulations on emissions for our vehicles. Therefore on the Ford the exhaust has an afterburner in the system that burns off any excess diesel particulates that don't burn up in normal operation. If you have a new diesel you will experience low fuel economy during this process. The regen process will also vary in frequency depending upon driving conditions. Usually takes mine about 30 minutes if sitting at idle. The idle will kick up to about 1200rpm. The more intown stop and go you do the more often it will regen. The truck will stay in this regen mode until it completes its cycle. (I have witnessed this first hand.) My driving is more stop and go so it has regened alot more than other people that I know that have them and drive on the hwy. I get crappy mileage at least I think I haven't gotten better than 12mpg on the hwy of course mine is still new and haven't road tested it yet. Other froends of mine get 16-18 hwy. Dealer says nothing is wrong with mine and every truck is different...they shouldn't be they are all made the same. Mine acutally started to dump smoke out the back in regen mode (which it's not suppoose to do) and the dealer still said nothing wrong with it. I have the 3.73 limited slip and auto tranny. If you have a new Ford watch the DVD they give you it'll tell you about the regen. If you haven't bought a diesel yet make sure you do your research. If you aren't hauling alot or on hte hwy all the time you might consider a gas engine. All new diesels do the regen Dodge is horrible I have heard.

As stated above, no big deal. I have almost 1000 miles on my F-350, 6.4 and I have not noticed the regen mode to date. It probably happened while I was driving as my short trips are over 10 miles. As gravdggr states, watch the CD that came with your truck a couple times and then you will be as smart as everyone.

07-4-11 6.4L DIESEL - REGENERATION FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Publication Date: February 20, 2007

FORD: 2008 F-Super Duty

ISSUE:
2008 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with the 6.4L diesel engine are equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter (OC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF). The function and operation of these parts may cause some customers to perceive an issue with their vehicle.

ACTION:
Review the Operating Characteristics with the customer.

OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS

Diesel particulates in the exhaust are trapped by the DPF. Regeneration is the process by which exhaust temperatures are increased so the particulates are combusted.

The frequency and length of regeneration will fluctuate as both are determined by the drive cycle. For most drive conditions, regeneration frequency will vary from 100 - 600 miles (161 - 804 Km) between occurrence and last from 10 to 40 minutes. The first regeneration does not require 100 miles (161 Km) and may occur at any time. The length of regeneration is usually reduced if a constant speed above 30 MPH (48 Km/h) is maintained.

The following is a list of normal operation while the vehicle is in regeneration, and do not require repair. If you are not sure if the vehicle is in regeneration, IDS can be used to monitor the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) PID.

Engine idle speed can be 1100 to 1200 RPM in park/neutral with foot off brake.
High idle speed drops to within 50 RPM of normal idle when the brake pedal is touched, PRNDL is actuated, or clutch is actuated.
White smoke in cold ambients is normal and the amount will be increased during regeneration.
Powertrain power is limited to 325 horsepower (HP).
Engine responsiveness may be slightly different than normal operation.
During initiation of regeneration, exhaust smell may be noticed - especially on new vehicles.
Powertrain sound will be different including air induction noise (including flutter on deceleration or engine shut down), exhaust noise, and changes in engine radiated noise.
During regeneration, exhaust temperatures are elevated.
The following is also normal and may be observed by a technician using a diagnostic tool. It is not likely that a customer would be aware of these:

The throttle body is only active during the regeneration process and during shutdown.
EGR is not operating during regeneration.
