I’m going to call Jody this week to take the plunge into the world of Perma-grin. I'm just trying to get everything in order before I call so I can give them the info they need or may ask for. I am thinking of the following tunes:
1. Stock
2. 40 hp Tow good for 13-15k. Should be the max I would ever tow.
3. 60 hp High Altitude. Good for mountain passes. I have spent 5 years in CO, and may spend more there.
4. 80 hp Tow good for 5-9k. This should be my typical tow/haul range.
5. 80 Econo for daily driving and mileage.
<O
This is my first shot at what I think I can/will use. Gauges are also in the work. But specifically, what is the opinion on the choices of tunes I have here? Any one have a “if I could do it over” point of view? I don’t want a redundant setting that I’ll never use, but don’t want to miss something I wish I had gotten. And yes I saw the performance/race tunes, but I gotta be easy on the tranny for a while! Speaking of, it’s seems pretty solid (AT) and the truck only has 101K on it. A BTS VB would be where I would start, but I drive my truck like it’s the last one on earth most days, and am trying to milk it for all it’s worth. <O
Specific tow/haul usage: Truck Camper about 3800 lbs, and a 20 ft car hauler (2K) with a 4500 lb IH Scout on it. Sometimes I’ll tow without the camper, sometimes I’ll camp without the Scout, or I may have the camper and the Scout at the same time. And I am also ready to pull the trigger on an MKO 5 inch with muffler. I know there is no performance gain over 4, but that's okay.<O
Skip the 80 econo. The shifts on the towing programs are much better than the race programs i think. I am sending my chip back soon for some reworkings and thats going to be one of them. I am getting all my tunes changed to the 60 tow shift files. replace that one with 140 agressive for the smoke factor!
I thought the 80 econo was pretty much the most used tune from what everybody on here says? It will be in my selection, mainly because tranny is bone stock......for now
My personal opinion, no VB and stock diode tranny, I used the 80econ the most. On the drag strip it performed about as well as the 120 race for the most part on stock injectors and turbo. So, anything over 80 econ may be a waste without bigger mods. Get the 60 tow and 80 econ. A lot of folks tow in the 80. I do. and have had no probs towing my approx 4k boat.

I wouldn't tow much more than 4000 in 80e, I forgot to change from 80e to 60t and I barley got up to 30 mph. I' thinking somthing is wrong, egt's were through the roof. DUH I stopped and switch to 60t I didn't want to do change it under load. I was towing 10K. I would think the 80t wouldn't do that as it is set up to tow. If you are going with 80t skip 80e.

Not to hijack but a short run of trannys came with a diode equipped one way clutch until ford could retool because it was prone to failure. Look here.
As for the differences between tow and econ tunes, I believe it has to do with how much you tow and fuel/timing for that weight. This should keep excessive EGTs in check. If you look at the table at the site you'll notice the tow HP programs go down in recommended HP as the desired tow weight increases.
As for the 80t vs the 80e program, I would bet it won't make as much power due to different fueling maps. A stock truck can benefit from a 120 tune but I saw very little performance increase between the two on the strip. Unfortunately I only ran the 120 on the dyno so cannot say about that. I know that my HPOP cannot keep up with the desired oil in the 120 and even sometimes in the 80e.
BTW, don't get wrapped around the axle on the actual HP #s for the tunes, they are more of a next-step up more aggressive fueling/power guide than actual HP rating. For example, I am fairly sure my 120r setting did not make 40hp more than my 80e. Hope this helps.
Thanks for all the replies so far. I saw the increased tow ratings with the lower hp ratings and figured it was a fuel mod to keep egt's down. About 98% of my time is unloaded so econo increase with better performance is my main need. Thanks again guys.
