4r70w not shifting into 3rd???? help
hey i got a buddy of mine with a o1 f150 with the 4r70w trans i belive thats what he said???? pretty sure though. anywho he was driving home the other day and it sudddenly would not shift into 3 or 4. gets to about 40mph and r's just keep climbing. i told him to have the codes read, he took it to dealer and they said it did not throw any codes( seemed wierd to me) i also told him to have them look at the speed sensor, which he forgot to ask them. anyway they dropped the pan and said there were no shavings, but said it did smell a little burnt. they say he needs a whole rebuild it just seems a little suspisous to me. i drive a duramax alison combo and my trans will always thow codes if something is up. i dont know much about fords so just was hoping you guys could lead me to a answer. so i guess, 1. do you think it sounds like a full rebuild, or just some new clutchs, 2. could it be the speed sensor on trans, would that throw a code?? 3. accumalator spring on 2-3 gears broke?? any other ideas it just seems weird to me, no noises, no grinding or rubbing, wineing etc. sorry i drive a chevy guys, but could ya help a guy out here, lol there telling him 2000$ and i dont want him to get screwed if its a 25$ speed sensor. thanks in advance hope y'all got some idea's for me

That's not a speed sensor. You really need to get a shop to do a proper diagnosis. It should be test driven with a scanner on it in "data" mode. This will tell if its getting speed sensor data and see if the PCM is commanding 3rd and 4th gears.
If the PCM was commanding 3rd/4th gear, and it wasn't shifting, it would throw a code. It could be the shift solenoid has gone bad. That's an easy fix but 4R70W shift solenoids RARELY fail. It could also be an internal problem. The accumulator could have blown out or the lip seal for the direct drum could have blown. Without the direct drum it won't go into 3rd or 4th. Then too it could have lost the mechanical diode. That's the one-way roller clutch on the intermediate drum.
Take it too a reputable transmission shop and ask to have a thorough diagnosis done.
