Going old School ??

As most of you know by now I have had nothing but trouble with my 1988
F-250 4X4 runnng crappy and now not starting at all.

I had a friend who suggested that I go to a carburated system and electronic ignition. Basically setting it up like a truck from the early 1970s.

Would need carb., intake mainfold, distributor !
Would I be rid of all the sensors and possibly the ECM ??

This sounds good to me, but what kind of problems might I run in to ??

It will be much easier to fix the problem rather than doing a conversion. What are the symptoms? Which engine do you have?

If your trans is computer controlled then you will have to still use it.

It is a 351W with fuel injection and automatic tranny !

I have an old thread called "1988 351W engine not running right" and explains everything in detail.
Thanks !

I don't mind so much the computer, but would love to be rid of sensors and fuel injection.

Personally I hate carbs, they dont ever tune right, dont change with weather and altitude. Fuel Injection is so much better, when its working right. I guess if you were to swap it would just be like doing it to a fox mustang. Just get a good carb.

I'm sure there is a lot more to this swap than meets the eye, but I had such great luck with my old 1972 F-250. "I miss it so much"
That truck could sit for 6-8 months and would always start right up no matter what time of year.
I would like to simplify the truck by making like my 72 !!

I too have thought about this, can't beat the sound of a 4bbl carb or the tunability, much less the ease of diagnosing issues and no little check engine lights for retartded reasons.

I never looked in depth to it, but right now my EFI is A-OK!

I looked at this thread and it seems you still haven't pulled the codes.. this is the first thing you need to do, and you don't need to have the motor running to do it. Go to fordfuelinjection.com to see how, it's simple, just need a paperclip or small piece of wire and pen & paper to wride down the sequences as they flash.

I hear you loud and clear on this concept. I LOVE my '78/'79 Ford Broncos. Only here basically because my neighbor cut me a deal (at least I think it was a deal) on a 1990 F150. I'm thoroughly annoyed with the EFI. It's 2,000 miles of wiring and a sensor for all occasions, in my opinion. Seems to me it's one bad wire... and it's all over...

From what I've learned... and this is NOT from doing it (yet?) The biggest concern with this swap idea is going to be your transmission. The E40D is computer controlled, not totally sure about the AOD, but I believe the C6 has zero computer attachments.

Seems to me this wouldn't be too insanely hard to do as long as you have a basic understanding of the Duraspark system and can figure out where to tie in the power. Another thing to check into is the gauge cluster. If you have an electronic speedo, that may factor in (related to the trans problem). Like I said... this is NOT from experience... just another guy who has been thinking about it also.

I blew it and missed out on a 351W carb intake last week at the junkyard... it was there and complete one day and then smashed and off to come back as a Toyota fender the next day. I blew it on an intake and distributor... GRRR!! But I have the E40D trans so I was kinda out of luck to begin with...

I'm sorry I have never displayed the codes, but it is because the truck is at my mechanics and he ran the diagnostic on it !

I'm still trying to remember to ask him when I'm there !

A C-6 is a 3 speed automatic where an AOD is a 4 speed automatic. Since it is an '88 model, I highly doubt it has a C6, unless someone installed it there.

The C6 was used between '68 and '96 on F150's - F450's so he might have a C6
