I was looking on LMC for a drives side fender for my 1979 short bed. It listed for $499.95. My jaw is still hurts from hitting the floor! Does anyone know if this is right or a misprint on the website. Is there another place that hopefully sells them cheaper?
Yup I am seeing 499 for original and 99 for a reproduction. LMC is about the last place I'd get body panels from. I'd go for an original and I'd look through the site sponsors first and if that doesn't work out then I'd hit the junkyards or Craigslist.
Just my opinion, but if you want quality sheetmetal, do not go through LMC for the aftermarket fenders. Those, just like the doorshells they offer, are Taiwan tin, and are way lighter grade than original.
They do sell some original Ford metal, but it's fairly expensive. I got the doorshells from them, and they were too flimsy to bother with painting. I just kept scouring the junkyards until I found a good pair of doors.
If LMC is offering OEM fenders, then it's up to you...but if they say it's aftermarket, buyer beware.
If you don't mind the trek to Kapuskasing, On (8 hrs north-west from Toronto) There's a 1979 Ford F250 with a 351W for sale for $400. Not the original engine, is a car engine that can be rebuilt to a 429 Cobra Jet. I'm not sure what type of trans it is. Has ps, pb. The long box is shot, but cab is very solid. Has the trim, black paint ext. red int. Truck belonged to a mechanic that is now deceased. Along with many of is cars, it has to be sold or crushed to finalize his estate. He has a complete 1 owner '61 Ford Falcon, that '79 truck and another '70s Ford truck that I purchased. The other cars are modern vehicles.
I have heard some of the Forum gurus state that you should not trust ANYBODY, forum sponsors included, when it comes to buying sheetmetal. If you want to see some expensive stuff, go to Denniscarpenter.com, they will make LMC look like a hellova great place to shop, if you are into cheap things.
I personally prefer used OE parts. Here, they are plentiful, and dirt cheap.
Anyone here in SoCal? I know where two NOS lefts are in the attic of a defunct autoparts store. Someone want them? I'll stop by and ask the old goat owner what the price is. Prolly be less than a 100 bucks...they've been there for ages, the store is in LA County, but I'm not saying where.
btw: I've never sold diddly on ebay, I just buy the cream on occasion (user name: m1895winchester). I have long time friends who have bought parts from me at swap meets since grandma was a girl. The chosen "few" can come by and buy some of the stash on occasion. Sheet metal interests me not...any deal for these fenders will be between the buyer and seller.

Subject: Questions:
Please tell me what gauge of steel the 67-79 Ford Truck body panels are stamped out of.
also are these stamped oout of North American or Asian steel ?
Is Rust proofing applied from factory ?
Dennis
Dear Dennis,
Our 67-79 Ford truck parts are made with 19 and 20 gauge steel. Most of these parts are manufactured by us right here in the states. We do sell some parts that were made in Taiwan. The steel we use is American, coated galvaneel steel. The Taiwanese use cold rolled steel and then apply a primer coat after the product is stamped. Please let us know what parts you are interested in and we will be able to give you a definite answer as to where they were made. Thanks for your interest.
Sincerely,
Dan Bacon
